“Funky, faded, yet fabulous (but overpriced)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2011

La Tour Rose, which has only 12 rooms, is in the heart of the oldest section of Lyon--close to tourist restaurants and shops and the pedestrian bridge across the river. The desk staff was exceptionally helpful. The bar seating outside was very nice. We had a room that was as large as some one-bedroom apartments with a separate sitting room and kitchenette and a large bathroom. The room was the full width of the building with large windows that opened at the front of the building on to the street and in the back on to a charming restaurant. The decor would be charmingly old-fashioned and faded if the price were not so expensive. At the current price, La Tour Rose offers lots of charm but not good value. For less money, the Hotel Royal on Bellecour Square offers far more luxury for the price.

“quaint and the reception staff very helpful”

We could not fault the service the staff gave us. Nothing appeared to be too much bother The room was interesting ,the bed comfortable. The room was rather dimly lit and the decor was subdued( in keeping with the age of the building)
Dinner in the dining room was good and nicely presented and breakfast was typically French
The hotel couldhardly be better postioned for seeing the most interesting parts of the old city

“Much better places to be found in Lyon”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2010

This hotel is in the histroic rue du Boeuf (where the superb Cours de Loges is situated), so it has a great location. La Tour Rose is a bit like a poor man's Cours de Loges (and to be honest we picked it because it was cheaper. I don't think it was value-for-money though - should have stayed again at the Cours de Loges!).

It seemed rather dusty and not well kept. The people on the desk were friendly but there seemed to be hardly anyone staying there. At all costs avoid breakfast. 18 euros per person is a rip off for what you get: the room where the 'buffet' was laid out had no-one else in it but two couples had eaten breakfast because all their detritus was on the tables. No-one was there to clear up. We had been told coffee was on the table - it was, in a half full flask on one of the abandoned tables. There was some cereal in plastic containers and one clean bowl. Some plain yoghurt and a couple of bits of overripe fruit. There were six slices of plastic ham and curled up cheese that you might buy for a kid's hamburger. A few rolls and a couple of tired croissants. A little bit of processed orange juice sitting warmly in its jug. BE CAREFUL - the first thing they ask when you arrive is if you want breakfast and you are marked down for it.

“Some problems”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 April 2007

As the previous poster said there definitely are some problems. The hotel is in a fantastic location and the restoration is imaginatively done. The silk draperies in the rooms are great and the bar is very hip. However in its present condition it s price should be well below 200 euros per room not over 300. We had a (dark) standard room where the walls of the loo were caving in, there was no cold water in the tub, the bedside tables were scruffy, the handle came off the door.....a notice in the room informed us there would be no internet access until May! At check out it took us half an hour to get the car out of the garage (25 euros per car per night) because the poor concierge hadn't been told where it was......The staff were very nice and helpful but at these prices I expect a bit more.

  • Liked — The silk draperies, the bar, the location.
  • Disliked — Over priced, in need of repair.

“Take care”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2006

This was a great hotel and the echoes are still there in the architecture and the silk draped rooms but the hotel is under new ownership and there are some problems as the new team attempt to get back to the old standards.
We had problems with our breakfast, which arrived each day with something missing, and the rooms are tired and in need of some repair work and the elevator broke down but was quickly fixed.
We only eat in the ground floor brassiere and had no problems with the food.
On the positive side the new owner Jacques Champion, his partner and all his people were outstandingly friendly and helpful.
My advice would be that if you don't mind a few rough edges in your hotel experience, this is still a special place but not quite to the standards of earlier times.
