We don't expect all that much from a hotel as not much time is spent in it. But there are certain things wished for, like good location, clean rooms, helpful staff, etc. Firstly, Hotel Angleterre is in an excellent spot. You can easily walk from Grenoble train or bus stations straight to the hotel (around 10 mins, even with luggage), no problems. Unfortunately you then find the only access into the hotel is by going up a small set of stairs! Struggling with luggage, this is not helpful. This was topped off by the most miserable woman on the front desk. Usually I find front desks are staffed by friendly, welcoming and chatty staff. Not so here. We weren't even given basic information such as breakfast times, etc. The room contained no paperwork to give us general hotel information either. More positive points: the room was okay & well soundproofed, the view was good, TV, DVD, and tea/coffee making facilities all included. Breakfast was included in our package, and this was a good full buffet selection. A guy worked hard on clearing the tables quickly and keeping the food replenished. But day after day, we found the various staff on the Front Desk (especially the first lady we had come across) unwelcoming. There was no small talk or helpful information. It didn't really matter if they spoke English or not, as there was no real communication going on! It would have been nice to have been able to get some tips on places to visit, etc, but we had better, friendlier, and more helpful communication with bus drivers and shop keepers. Oh - and the room cleaner was lovely too (perhaps she should have been put on the Front Desk!). Grenoble itself hasn't got a lot to keep you occupied for long - but has an excellent transport system (if a touch vague at times) - and you can take day trips out to many places for reasonable prices (by bus especially). So, overall view of Hotel Angeleterre: stay here for great access to everything, but don't expect anything much from the staff.
