Hello again Folks,
Please find our fair and independent review of the Hotel Angleterre, Grenoble. From two forty something’s.
We arrived on Monday 4th July, 2011. We were allocated room 304, which was charged at 103 euros.
We checked in and the young lady on reception spoke fantastic English. We were instructed on how to reach the car parking, which is just a couple of hundred yards away in an underground multi story car park. The hotel will pay for your parking, in between the hours of 17.00pm - 10.00am the following day. Before or after these times, you will have to fund yourselves.
There is a drop off bay directly outside the hotel, where you are allowed to stay for ten minutes, while you off load luggage and check in. You can then park the car up. This worked well.
The hotel enjoys a fantastic location, very close to the main centre, where most shops, bars and restaurants are situated. There are several quaint, relaxing squares / plazas to be found if you look around, where it was very pleasant to eat and drink.
It is a large busy City and the local drivers will dart from lane to lane with very little indication or consideration for other users. So you have to be on your toes !!! Talking of traffic, when we left Grenoble on the following morning, to travel to Baden baden, there was at least a 5 - 6 mile queue to enter the City. So you may want to consider your time of arrival. This was about 9.30am when we departed.
The hotel advertises as a three star accommodation. The rooms were very basic, but clean, tidy and comfy and the a/c worked well. So considering the room rate, it exactly what it said on the tin and therefore there are no moans or grumbles. It served its purpose for the night and does not pretend to be anything other than a three star residence.
On arriving at the City we were of mixed emotions. Travelling from Northern Spain, we drove through beautiful countryside and beside amazing rivers, gorges and rock faces. On entering the main City, it has to be mentioned that dreadful graffiti is daubed everywhere. Doorways, building, windows, litter bins and even the pavement in places.
This was very sad.
But upon finding the pretty plazas as mentioned beforehand and enjoying a fantastic duck and dauphinoise potato evening meal, we were really pleased that we visited and stayed for the night.
Overall, we would return to both City / Hotel and recommend accordingly.
I hope you all find this report of some help
Gary.
