“Charming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2011

We visited in late October and found this to be a wonderul time to be in Evian. There were no crowds, the weather was perfect and the leaves were almost in full fall color. We had a delightful room - large and bright. The complimentary breakfast, which was served in the living area of the building in which our room was located, was wonderful. The restaurant was also lovely. We planned on eating there only once but ate there 3 nights in a row because the food was so good. The staff was friendly and welcoming. We will definitely go back. Highly recommended.

“Lovely hotel and fantastic food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2010

We visited this hotel in March as we love the hotels by Relaix Chateaux. The staff were great and we had our bags taken to our room in the next building along. everything is quite twee but very charming and our room was lovely, great bathroom etc. There would have been seating outside but it was freezing when we went and even started to snow! Which was very picturesque actually! The hotel didn't seem that busy and honestly i would have expected an upgrade to a room with a better view or chalet as we tend to get this automatically with Relaix, but anyhow the view was still nice and it was quite foggy anyway because of the weather. We were a bit stuck getting down to the lake because we came without a car but the owner i thnk it was actually gave us a lift down which was great! (it's down quite a steep hill and not walkable) You just wouldn't get that service with many places. And she insisted she would pick us up too which we had to take her up on a couple of times as taxis are few and far between!
We went to the Evian spa and took the boat over to Lausanne which was great.
We dined at the hotel twice and the food was fantastic. I think we were given the special menu over the set one the first night so we were spoilt and the second night we asked for the same but they said we would have to pay a supplement that time which we really didn't care about as it was so lovely!! And the cheeseboard---well, my partner almost fainted, we were in heaven. It was a bit of a pain walking to and from the different building for dinner and to our room as it was so cold and icy but i can imagine it being lovely in summer. We would have loved for a better view but it wasn't the end of the world.
Breakfast was great but wasn't really on the same par as other Relaix Chateaux hotels we've stayed in.

“A beautiful place to stay, but don't stay half board”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2010

This really is a hotel that you feel happy to be in. The rooms are nice, the rambling buildings have character, the gardens are full of flowers and there is a nice swimming pool.

With the reopening of the funicular railway just down the road, it is easy to get to and from the lakeside. However, it stops running at around 7pm so if you eat out (as you will need to) be prepared for the very steep uphill walk back to the hotel.

The food in the restaurant was very good, however the restaurant was one of the drawbacks of the hotel. The menu really is very limited - if you stick to the 36 euro menu there are only two choices. That would be fine if it changed, however it is permanently the same limited menu. Even for lunch there is no snack or more limited menu - there is just the option to take two courses of the same evening menu. As a result staying half board for say a week really would be a mistake! The absence of any sort of bar menu for lunch is a real shame as it would have been nice to have been able to stay in the grounds.

The other downside is that the room was oppressively stuffy even with the windows wide open and we didn't sleep well at all - whilst the weather was warm, it was not particularly hot. Surely at this level air conditioning could be expected if the rooms get so hot - even the Premiere Classe hotel we stayed in on the way had it!

“Very nice place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2009

We chose this hotel largely from the good reports we read in trip advsor and the French guide book Petit Futé. Our stay was very pleasant and I would recommend the Verniaz to others. The purpose of our visit was to explore the local area and enjoy some good food and so we took the cheaper, non-lakeside rooms in the hotel building. Our room was bright and looked onto Alpine prairy, cottages and distant mountain, The bathroom was bright and spaceous and there were lots of agreeable details in our room such as fresh flowers (changed after 2 days!) We ate in the restaurant once. It is French gastronomy with an excellent 3 course meal at €39. I can recommend the cheese platter.

This hotel has a lot of character. It is old world which means plenty of style but wooden floors that creak, old fashioned lift and no air conditioning (there is a nice outdoor pool if you need to cool off as well as a ventilator fan in the room...) If you prefer sterile modern conveniences to charm, better chose the Hilton in Evian.

“beautiful property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2008

This is an extremely attractive property and is perfect for an authentic french country inn experience. The outdoor spaces are beautiful. The service is formal yet friendly and extremely attentive. The room facing the lake was traditionally styled with a very modern and quite large bathroom. Unfortunately, the bed was not as comfortable as I would have hoped (slightly lumpy) so I could not give this stay more than 4 stars. In addition, as with many very small properties, there is not a no smoking option here. The room had a slight smoke smell covered up with air freshener. With so few rooms I know this presents a dilemma for the hotelier but I think in time all will concur that no smoking properties are the way to go. When available, these properties are my top picks.

Yes the breakfast is a little expensive but who cares. You're on vacation and from a selection and quality perspective it's well worth it (and I'm picky about hotel breakfasts). The breakfast room (see pic) is a perfect place to start the day as well. We also ate in the restaurant which was quite good with a high level of service.

I would stay here again hoping between now and then the beds will be replaced and they (and most of Europe for that matter) catch the wave of all non smoking hotel properties.

  • Liked — gardens, bathroom, restaurant, breakfast
  • Disliked — beds, lack of a no-smoking option
