This really is a hotel that you feel happy to be in. The rooms are nice, the rambling buildings have character, the gardens are full of flowers and there is a nice swimming pool.
With the reopening of the funicular railway just down the road, it is easy to get to and from the lakeside. However, it stops running at around 7pm so if you eat out (as you will need to) be prepared for the very steep uphill walk back to the hotel.
The food in the restaurant was very good, however the restaurant was one of the drawbacks of the hotel. The menu really is very limited - if you stick to the 36 euro menu there are only two choices. That would be fine if it changed, however it is permanently the same limited menu. Even for lunch there is no snack or more limited menu - there is just the option to take two courses of the same evening menu. As a result staying half board for say a week really would be a mistake! The absence of any sort of bar menu for lunch is a real shame as it would have been nice to have been able to stay in the grounds.
The other downside is that the room was oppressively stuffy even with the windows wide open and we didn't sleep well at all - whilst the weather was warm, it was not particularly hot. Surely at this level air conditioning could be expected if the rooms get so hot - even the Premiere Classe hotel we stayed in on the way had it!
