We visited this hotel in February 2012 for a Snowboarding trip to Chamonix over a long weekend. The hotel is quite old fashioned but has a very homely feel and has an honest French charm to it. The staff were really friendly, welcoming and willing to help with any queries we had. For a 10 euro deposit for the lock, you can secure skiing equipment downstairs in the basement. The hotel don't allow you to store your boards and skis in your room but we managed to squeeze two snowboards into the same lock. The hotel has a lift. The twin room itself (Room 52 on the 3rd floor) was clean, warm and dry and spacious. The room was old fashioned in keeping with the rest of the hotel. We had a 32" Samsung LCD TV in the room with free access to some British BBC channels. There is no 'Pay-Per View' facility available but the TV had USB support and a spare HDMI port allowing us the ability to connect a media player and a laptop to the TV. There were four power sockets on the wall in total, one used by the TV, One by the desk lamp and two free sockets. There are no tea making facilities in the room so we took a travel kettle and some mugs, plates, tea, coffee and sugar with us. We didn't have Wi-Fi access in the room but Wi-Fi is available in the lobby area. It costs 3 euros which covers you for the entire duration of your stay. They issue you with a slip of paper with a username and password on. Once connected to the unsecured wireless network, simply open your internet browser and enter your username and password into the page which loads automatically and you're away. The internet is fast enough for Skype video calls but can sometimes have connectivity issues if a few people are using it at the same time. There aren't any computers provided, so you will need a laptop, netbook, tablet or smartphone of your own to access the internet. There is plenty of seating and a couple of lounge areas you can use if you want. Generally the lobby was very quiet. We had a balcony in our room and were able to open the French doors and go out. The room overlooked the town, which is beautiful. Our bathroom was very basic and utilitarian looking but had a really nice, hot and powerful shower which was easy to use and welcome after a day in the mountains. The hotel is located right on the pedestrianized town centre with shops, bars, takeaways and restaurants right on the doorstep. We had breakfast included with our stay. Breakfast starts at 7:30am and is continental with cereal, crossaints, pain au chocolat, bread, cheese, ham, yoghurt, Orange juice and boiled eggs etc, all of which you just help yourself. There are no options for a cooked breakfast or special requests, but there is plenty there for you to choose from. I'm not sure that the hotel does lunch or evening meals, but given what is available on the doorstep, it's not an issue. There is no room service available and no newspapers either, however there are lots of Petit Casino's (Mini Supermarket chain) dotted around the town and a Super U further up the high street, all of which are very reasonably priced and offer a limited selection of both French groceries and more internationally familiar brands. As far as food goes, a particular favourite of ours was the Burger Avec Frites Double American with Cheese for 7 euros 60 from a place called Midnight Express, a street-facing takeaway outlet 2 minutes walk from the hotel and has now secured itself for us as a Chamonix ritual. Possibly the nicest and biggest burger I have ever had! Probably enough for two people. There is a bar in the hotel lobby, but during our stay this was unmanned and rather understocked looking. Directly opposite the hotel, there is a place called 'Le Pub' which is a great place for a couple of pints. it was mostly full of of Brits, Americans and Canadians and was reasonably priced given that our stay was during a busy period for the Chamonix world cup downhill skiing. If there was one criticism for our stay, I would say that the walls were fairly thin or were particularly efficient at conducting sound. We could hear the people in the neighbouring rooms talking, some of the occasional rowdiness from the street below at night and the toilet flushing in the room above. I would simply just take some earplugs with me next time I stay as I'm sure given the age of the building, realistically there is little that the staff can do to fix this. I will be visiting here again though and would like to highly recommend to friends and family looking to visit Chamonix.
Room Tip: South facing rooms have a balcony overlooking the pedestrianized street, however this can mean that...
