We are just back from 3 days in Chamonix and this hotel really capped off a memorable holiday. From the start, we could not have enjoyed ourselves more.
The foyer of the hotel is reminiscent of old world grandeur from the reception area to the beautiful piano bar. Our room was a good size and had a certain quaintnesss that comes with age. Some of the furniture was mismatched but I think this added to the charm. We were on the 5th floor and had breathtaking views of the mountains. The one slight criticism is that the toilet and bathroom could do with a little updating but this is a small quibble.
The location is right in the centre of the town but 1 street away from the noisy bars so we were never woken up by revellers.
Where this hotel really stands out are on both service and the food. From the moment we arrived in the hotel, we were greeted with a friendly respect and nothing was too much trouble. Every evening when we arrived back from a tough day on the slopes, our skis were taken off us and deposited in our locker. Also, when we were looking for directions back to Lyon, they took out a big map and took lots of time to plot the shortest route.
We ate in the main restuarant 1 night and for E37 we ate probably the finest 7 course meal we have ever tasted. This included oysters, foie gras, scallops, pork....served in the prettiest way. We eventually had to refuse the cheeseboard because we were too full!! We tried to eat there again on our last night but the restuarant was full so we had to go down the town and were served vastly inferior food for the same price which was all the more annoying knowing what we could have been enjoying. So book the restuarant for at least 1 night even if you're not staying in the hotel - you will not be disappointed.
All in all, a memorable stay and we will definitely be back!!.
I cannot finish this review without mentioning the ski guides we had for our 3 days skiing. They are called Chamonix Fun Tours and can be booked through the ESF main office. If you are at a decent level, do try this. Eric and Lionel will collect you from your hotel every morning and bring you to the best snow and conditions for the day, guide you to places you've never been before - mainly off piste and then deposit you back at your hotel at the end of the day. They cater for everything from intermediate to mental and you can swap between classes if the going in one class is either too tame or too scary(I moved from scary to tame for the last afternoon, as my legs couldn't take it anymore!) They will aslo provide tuition but not too so much that you're constantly waiting around. They will also bring you to the nicest restuarant for lunch on whatever mountain you're skiing. They are not cheap but definitely worth it and most of their business is repeat. In fact we were skiing with a couple who had been returning to the guides for 20 years.
I cannot recommend either hotel or Cham Fun Tours highly enough - the whole holiday was truly memorable.
