The hotel is located in what we consider to be the best town in the Riviera. The hotel is quite old, although at the time of our visit (June 2011) the guest rooms had undergone a recent refurbishment. Our room was extremely well kept (thanks to the renovation), clean and spacious enough to be comfortable for my wife and I during our 5 nights there. Our bathroom was tiny, so for a larger size couple, this could be a problem.
In terms of location, the hotel is within 5 minutes walk of 'the old town', which is the more quaint part of Villefranch-Sur-Mer (where the picturesque harbour, cafes and restaurants are located). The location of the hotel is up a fairly steep hill, which could be a challenge for anyone with mobility issues. The town of Villefranche is a lot less touristy than the other more well known towns of the Riveria. It has a real village feel to it and on most days we were there we felt as though there were more locals wandering the streets, rather than tourists. That said, for the days when the cruise ships pull into the bay, the tourist numbers go up dramatically! We found all the locals we met to be extremely hospitable and genuine people.
The town and hotel are within 15 minutes drive of Nice and 30 minutes drive of Monaco.
In terms of value for money, we were extremely happy with what Hotel Provencal offers and will stay there again next time we visit. Our only advice would be to ask for a room which has been renovated.
