Having read all other reviews, which made me book this place, I now must add my findings. Yes, it is a quite a pretty old mas (of which there are hundreds in this part of France), yes the rooms were nice and clean, the bed was comfortable (thank goodness) and the linen was of a decent quality. I am incredibly fussy about these things! The only furniture in the room were a pair of very cheap, tiny bedside tables which had been painted fashionably dark taupe/grey with a very cheap skimpy lamp (sort of thing you buy in France at the supermarkets) and a basic desk painted the same colour with a rush seat chair. Up on the first floor the view is only of the top of the olive trees on the property. Breakfast was okay - why shsouldn't the owner go and buy fresh rolls and pastries every day - all French do anyway. It was very expensive at 15 Euros each considering there was no fruit on offer and no cooked egg. What irritated me most was the fact that you have to drive in the dark up and down the 3 km twisty mountain road to go and get something to eat in the evening as there is no other meal on offer. If you broke down you'd be in trouble that's for sure. We thought it was plenty of money at a rate of 180 Euros per night, ecxcluding the breakfast, to be stuck out there. We then moved on down to Cap d'Antibes for a few more days and paid less money for both room and breakfast, but at least you could go and get a wide choice of something to eat in evenings. I thought Tourettes itself very boring in the restaurants open (about 4 maximum) and either very costly for one of them and very basic pizza and pasta for the others. By the way, I do know the whole of that area very well. I chose this place as friends we were seeing who live there had other guests and couldn't accommodate us also. 210Euros per night was pretty excessive for this out of the way place with no view, hairy drive to it and no choice but to go out all day and evening. Charming lady owner though.

This is the most gorgeous place to stay. It is an old Provencale building converted into a home and four-room B & B with fabulous charm and good taste. The rooms are all different and the bathrooms just amazing. We liked the upstairs room very much - Something Amours and were not so keen on the downstairs room which is a little dark and public - but has the most amazing bathroom (sorry to bang on but...)

There is a good size swimming pool with loungers and umbrellas etc set in a perfect garden scented with lavendar, full of olive trees of astounding antiquity, bees and a whole range of butterflies.

Sandrine who runs it, only does breakfasts but firstly these are the best ever: fresh orange juice, a different sort of fruit/cake/fromage frias combination and then a basket of delicious breads and viennoiserie. Plus her homemade jams. And she does perfect coffee and stocks Earl Grey. And it's all delicious and prettily served in exquisite surroundings. Do you sort of get the impression we liked it yet?

Secondly, she has what seems to be an encyclopedic knowledge of the best restaurants around - and will make reservations and obtain the best tables. You have to try the auberge de Tourettes - one of the best set meals I have ever had - but her other other ideas were all good too.

Tourettes is a delightful small town in the hills above the Riviera. It's all very Jean de Florettes. Sat nav doesn't work but you definitely need a car.

Practically perfect for a romantic break - or in our case - to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary.

This is a really lovely B&B just outside Tourrettes-sur-Loup above the Cote d'Azur. It's a converted hunting lodge set in the remains of an olive grove. It's a peaceful spot - the only intruding noise came from the shouts of English children in a neighbouring house's pool.
Lovely light and airy room overlooking the garden, simply but comfortably furnished.
Highlights included breakfast on the terrace under a vine and wisteria-laden pergola. Breakfast consisted of fruit, yoghurt and rolls and croissants. Good stuff, but expensive at 15 euros!
The place is run by a charming and elegant lady, Sandrine. (Photo of her appearing on the terrace with breakfast tray). Also adding to the charm was a large but friendly dog called Boulliz (see photo), who appeared at breakfast in the hope of being offered a brioche, but never overstayed her welcome.

Tourrettes is a great spot. We were there in early June and it was busy but not intolerably so. I could imagine it might get overrun with tourists in the summer. It's a medieval village with wonderful winding cobbled streets. No cars in the medieval bit, and a (mercifully) cheap car park where you can abandon your car. Sandrine can recommend and book restaurants - of which there are plenty. All ferociously expensive. Expect to pay about £50 a head. A bottle of the local Vin de Pays is 30 euros in most restaurants. A bottle of chablis or sauvignon 45 or 50! A modest bottle of claret right off the richter scale.

At 195 euros a night, plus another 15 per person for breakfast this is a very expensive B&B by English standards. However on the Cote d'Azur it's probably pretty average, and it IS a very lovely place.

Only reservation, apart from cost, is the lane to get to it. There's a 2-3 k drive down a winding narrow lane to get there, and the opportunity for meeting another car head-on is pretty good. I suppose that's the price you have to pay to be out in the sticks.

My boyfriend took me to the south of France for a four-day break for my birthday, and I was lucky enough to stay at the Histoires de Bastide during that time.

The hotel is located a short, winding drive from the little medieval town of Tourettes-sur-Loup (definitely worth a wonder around, amazing views) and affords the most incredibly scenery. It only took us around 30 minutes to drive to and from Nice, and was well placed to explore the Riviera.

It is, without a doubt, the most ravishing property I have ever visited, just simple, chic, calm perfection. It really does look like the photos on the website.

We stayed in the Manon des Sources room on the ground floor, which opened to the verandah and olive groves, and was only a few steps to the pool. The very elegant Sandrine showed us around the property, and introduced us to the excitable dog. The first thing we noticed in our room was the sheer size - absolutely enormous - particularly the bathroom, which was bigger than the average hotel room. Everything was tiled in cool, Provencal terracotta, and the roof was all wooden beams, which ensured the room was constantly temperate.

(Unfortunately the one small problem was that the wooden roof meant that we could hear a lot of walking around in the room above us in the morning, and also the pipes 'sung' when they took a shower)

However, the love which Sandrine has put into the property is evident in all the little details. Beautiful robes, lovely white towels, Provencal toiletries. The pool is an oasis of calm, and there are plenty of places to lounge around with a book. You cannot possibly leave this place without being relaxed!!!

I must make particular mention of the fabulous breakfast, which was different every day...we had warm almond tarts, organic yoghurts, fruit, baguettes and home-made jam. Tea was served in Villeroy and Boch china.

Absolutely wonderful - don't even think of booking anywhere else!

  • Liked — The decor, design, the pool, the hosts
  • Disliked — the noise upstairs
