La Ponche is one of the few St. Tropez hotels that is actually on the sea. It is entwined in one of the older, quieter quarters of the village and located minutes away from the port and the Place des Lices. It is an elegant, small hotel and indigenous of the Mediterranean’s “simple but chic” style. It’s also intimate and artistic. It was once a stomping ground for Pablo Picasso in the 1950’s when it was known as Bar de la Ponche before it was converted into a hotel.
There are 18 spacious rooms. The furnishings, bedding and toiletries are all four-star quality. Throughout Provence you can smell hints of lavender and rosemary and this can be detected inside the hotel, as well. I remember my clothes having this amazing scent after I returned home and unpacked my suitcase. One of my fondest memories at the hotel is the morning we decided to have room service deliver breakfast and enjoyed it on our terrace under the gorgeous blue sky. Coffee, fresh squeezed blood-orange juice, croissants, and fruitful jams…….it was all amazing.
I’ve had the pleasure of staying here twice. My third visit can’t come quick enough! J’aime La Ponche de St. Tropez!
“Intrigued by its radiant sunlight and startling beauty, there was a wave of painters, writers and other artists who embraced St. Tropez as their haven.”
