My wife and I have visited San Raphael about four times in the last 10 years, staying at a different hotel each time. We really like the town which is not too busy in May but has more than enough to see and do. The Hotel Excelsior is in my view in the best location in the town. Right on the promenade across the road from the beach and the Med. It is close to all the shops, restaurants, train station, ferries to St Tropez etc. We did not book but walked in off the street. We could not have a sea view room as there were none available. However the room we were allocated was described as having a town view but in fact had quite a good sea view (room 211).
The room was not large but certainly did not feel cramped. The decor needed a bit of an update but nothing serious. The bed was comfortable and new bed linen and towels were supplied every day. There was a mini bar with an adequate supply of goodies in the form of beer, water, soft drinks, wine etc.. The colour TV was small and a bit old fashioned but worked well with a reasonable range of French and other european channels (best of all it had BBC1 which is most unusual as I hate the normal alternative of BBC World). The room had no bath but a good shower and top quality accessories.
Breakfast was basic but we certainly did not go hungry. Staff were pleasant and always helpful. We stayed 6 nights and despite some poor weather had an enjoyable stay. Will stay at The Excelsior next time we visit.
San Raphael remains our favourite place in France.
