This, mostly passed its heyday hotel, was for us, an oasis in an otherwise treacherous trip, driving from Perugia, central Italy to Paris, in hazardous winter conditions in a fully packed VW Golf, with a frightened and restless kitten on board for her first drive with the two back tires desperately wanting to peel off their rims. But that's another story.
My shrewd partner had secured two special coupons that reduced our price considerably to only 130EU per night (in lieu of 560EU not including BF) for a big suite which included the infamous crazy overpriced buffet breakfast, normally at 27EU pp! After admiring the impressive coastal lights for a bit from our generous balcony, the first night, we essentially arrived in time only to sleep, which we did blissfully on the massive and comfortable bed. (We did specifically ask for one double and not two singles put together but were too tired to make a fuss over it. Couldn't tell the difference anyway.) It was a very quiet period for the rambling old hotel and after a late in sleep we sauntered down to the buffet BF. Apart from the impressive freshly squeezed OJ machine the BF was no better from most others we'd had in our stays and not as good as some. Don't know where they get off asking an extra 27EU from folks that pay the hefty full price? After BF, we decided the indoor/outdoor heated swimming pool was not hot enough to compete with the December chill and so booked ourselves for a 20EU pp two hour dip in the Health centers "well being" indoor heated pool. Money well spent. We had a few hours to kill before the swim so decided to check out the hotels guest facilities. They offered a billiards table, table tennis table and table football game. (Ask for the games room key at reception first.) In the small gym next door to the central swimming pool there is a nice little sauna, and watch your head on the step-up machines low ceiling room. Ouch! Finally it was time for our long awaited swim! The pools environment was wonderfully serene and we were lucky enough to have the whole center to ourselves most of the time. Apart from the swim we had access only to the lie down room. The "well being" center offered much more at pretty reasonable rates but this was plenty for us. That night we were going to eat in St Paul but my clever dick girl noticed a tempting dinner special in the hotel restaurant that we opted for. (BTW, St Paul is one of the most delightful little towns we had ever seen. Ask the hotel about their free shuttle in and out). So contrary to some articles we had read, the dinner ended up being very, very good. The fact we only paid 49EU for two people (plus drinks) helped some.
Overall impressions. Firstly, I think that we were particularly spoiled by being there in the low season. The staff were friendly and helpful and we were well fed. They accept pets and though we gave no warning they didn't balk when taking in our insane kitten. The hotel and rooms were a little run down but nothing to complain about, though again, at full price it might be slightly a different story. We found it charming and even romantic and we enjoyed sauntering around this vast hotel. If we were ever to pay full price I would pay the extra, extra, and opt for one of the ground floor rooms that have each their own private swimming pool, otherwise stay when they offer one of their many year-round discount stays and you should enjoy yourself. Ultimately, for the high (full) price they ask I'm sure one could do better.
