If you are looking for a 5 star hotel then this is not it. That said, this place is perfect for what it is...inexpensive two star accommodation in the perfect location. I was slighty worried about the reviews that mentioned bed bugs so I was a bit wary before we got there but I couldn't have been more pleased with what we got. My sister and I stayed here for three nights and loved every minute of it. The hotel staff are super friendly, free magazines and books in the hall, and cozy rooms with character and comfy beds. The room was a bit small (we had two twin beds) and the bathroom was tiny (and so close to the beds that if you are a self conscious toilet person then this isn't for you) but it all worked for us and we really didn't care. The hotel couldn't have been in a more perfect location - just off Place Messena - and even though it's a busy thoroughfare, the room was quite quiet. I suppose the only bad thing I could say was that sometimes the water pressure and temperature fluctuated but I found that I could time my shower just right so that I wasn't competing with any one else and it worked out fine. It's not a fancy place but then it doesn't advertise itself as such. All said, this was a real gem and such a bargain compared to the rest of Nice. And no bed bugs were found on this occassion!

I rented a single room for one week and during that week I was bitten VERY frequently by bed bugs. Since I did not react immediately, I did not know I had bedbugs - despite the telltale signs of drops of blood on the sheets. The hotel staff must have realized as they repeated moved the single bed away from the wall, yet they did not inform me. As a result, I brought the bed bugs home with me because I was not informed of the possiblitity and I had no previous experience with bedbugs. After explicitly googling 'Hotel Rex' and 'bedbugs' upon my return home, I discovered that others had also had the same experience.

Hotel Rex is no doubt a bit past its best, but it wasn't horrible.

Good bits - location is excellent, it was pretty cheap and everything in our room pretty much worked. Reservation process and check in was a breeze.

Bad bits - Certainly not for the mobility-impaired - loads of stairs which were a real challenge with suitcases. Although our room was fine - one evening there was a lot of loud banging as some folks couldn't get into their room for about an hour as the lock had broken.

Overall - I wouldn't rush back to Nice anyway, but if you are keen and the price is right, the Rex is passable.

After reading many positive reviews a month ago, I booked a room for a quick weekend get away. What a MISTAKE!!! The only real benefit is it's value for it's central location, but it's absolutely not worth it. Not only did the literally small, closet bathroom smell "interesting", there were BED BUGS!!! I have small bug bites all over my upper body and a couple on my face.
