“Budget Hotel, Fantastic Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2011

This is a no frills hotel, basic but functional, staff friendly & helpful. The rooms are small but this is typical of hotels in Nice. Our room did have a balcony which gave the room nice airy feeling. There is a fabulous old lift. The biggest downer was the smallness of the bathroom which is only the width of the shower! However, the room & bathroom was clean. We did not take breakfast as there are plenty of coffee shops near.
The big plus for this hotel is not only the price but its location just meters from the beautiful Massena Square (the one with the large fountains). The tram can be taken here which will take you to the train station. Cross the square to the Old Town. On arrival at the Airport take the airport bus (No. 98) directly outside the exit doors of the airport & get off at ‘Albert 1er’ this stop is just as the bus turns off the promenade cross the main square turn right then 1st left just before the large Aston Hotel. On returning to the Airport , the bus stop (No. 98 again) is just at the end of the street on the left. The hotel is quite happy to hold your luggage until you are ready to leave for the airport so you don’t have to trail it far. Also, as the main ‘Gare Routiere’ (Main bus station) is being demolished the buses for Menton/Monaco 100 & 200 for Cannes are also nearby. If you are looking for a hotel just to use as a base i.e. Sleep & freshen-up then this hotel is totally adequate.

“my worst experience!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2011

We stayed two nights in Acanthe during our motorbike trip in Europe. I have never got so bad and arrogant service! That was pity cause Nice was our first stop in France and that hotel service made us to think to leave France very soon. Luckily we got much better service in Menton. In the second day we were not even able to use the room cause men were fixing the pipes in our room! They gave us that room tough they knew that there will be pipe fixing next day. Of course "lady" in reception claimed that they didnt know but I saw paper about the water brake when we arrived the day before. What a waist of money! We didnt get any money back tough we were forced to wait hours in reception after sweaty city walk. Think twice before you "invest" to that hotel!

“Budget hotel with good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2011

We spent 3 nights in Hotel Acanthe, Nice.

The best thing about the hotel is location. It is very near to Nice bus terminus (from where you can take buses to Monaco, Cann etc.) It is in town center and access to lots of different shops/restaurants was very easy.

The hotel is very basic. The rooms are tiny and bathroom/toilet is quite small. Breakfast is also very basic.

They don't provide shampoo as it was 1-star (that was reply of receptionist).

All receptionists we met could speak good English. My travel adptor did not fit in the plug so they lent me one.

“Atmospheric cheapie in downtown Nice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2010

Spent a night here at the begining of a cycling trip through Southern France - the Acanthe must be one of the most curiously shaped hotels I've ever seen; the building looks like a Belle-Epoque pie slice. Since it also has a wonderful old iron cage elevator, the place can be highly recommended to those who are (like me) fed up with anonymous chain hotels and continually in search of an authentic, old-fashioned hotel experience.
Other pluses: Friendly services, very competitive rates (at least in such an expensive city), and an excellent location in the centre of downtown.

“great location, staff and value.”

i stayed here in 1999 and was happy to see that they had room for me after a disappointing one night stay at a four star up the street. my room - 47 - was small but comfortable and the redone bath attractive. the newer double pane windows did an excellent job of keeping out the street noise but i always recommend traveling with earplugs in case the neighbors are noisy. i paid 60 euros but next time will try for room 28, 38 or especially 48 because they offer an excellent view for 71 euros. i would like to see BBC or SKYE as a tv option. the shower had plenty of hot water although if you 6-4 and 275 lbs like i am you'll find it tiny to say the least!!
the hotel is easily accessed from the rail station. if your traveling light, you can walk it in 15 minutes or you can jump on the tram which runs every 5 minutes or so and get off at the second stop within 100 yds in 6 or 7 minutes and it costs 1 euro!! the bus station is a 5 minute walk and you can jump on the bus to Monaco every 20 minutes also for one euro. the hotel sits right on the line between old and new Nice - perfect location. you can walk to the beach in less then 10 minutes - a word of caution here - the water in Nice is wonderful but the access is truly treacherous. smooth, slippery rocks. you need serious footwear - something that straps on fore and aft or better yet tennis shoes. forget about being fashionable and save your feet and possibly your entire vacation.
now for the best part - the staff. Josette has a wonderful, well directed crew and the star of the show is Katarina. helpful and always cheerful, she is just a delightful person. the chambermaids do a fine job. i had occasion to talk to the boss concerning a suggestion i had for a shower curtain and he was receptive and appreciative. excellent staff.
it ain't the Ritz, but the Acanthe is well run, well located and an excellent value.
