Summary A good hotel with some drawbacks.
The negatives:
Rude and unhelpful check in person who told my wife that we had booked two rooms over the internet and so must pay for both. My wife made the booking – for one room - and after clicking on “send” to make the booking she received no response: no confirmatory email, nothing. So she repeated the performance and received a confirmatory email – for one room. On check in my wife was told we had booked two rooms and she explained the problem with the booking – a problem most people will have experienced on occasion. The receptionist was adamant this had never happened to the hotel before and that we had to pay for both rooms. The matter was resolved when I parked the car and spoke with this unpleasant person. NOT a pleasant experience and not a person suited to a front desk.
Aside from the above the receptionist was not prepared to tell my wife about parking until our bags had been bought into reception.
There is no off-street parking within 500 meters of this hotel. Street parking is almost impossible to find. To unload baggage it is necessary to stop the car and block off one of two lanes in a very busy street. There was no porter to assist with our bags, although there is one of those tiny lifts that are common in small European hotels.
There is very little storage space in the room other than a small single wardrobe, so it is impossible to unpack if one is making the grand European tour!
Wifi, Described accurately as being available in the lobby area. However only one device may be logged on at a time. The connection is “flakey” and when my connection was quickly lost, it was necessary to re-enter the login and lengthy password. When it happened a few moments later I gave up.
The shower is a curious arrangement set over the bath – with the shower screen at the opposite end of the bath. As a result the whole bathroom tends to be soaked by spray.
Tax. The confirmatory email states that the quoted rate “includes taxes” but it transpired not the nightly Nice city tourist tax – which is described in the pile of small print at the foot of the email. Tricky!
No tea or coffee making facilities.
No robes were available, but scuffs or slippers were provided (forget that vision!).
The good.
The location for the beach could not be better nor for vieux, or old, Nice.
We had room 22. It is a great room with a wide balcony, for the view over the bay, beach and Promenade des anglais. Although it overlooks this busy road, double-glazing and air conditioning ensure a good nights sleep in comfortable beds.
The room was impeccably cleaned by a charming French lady.
There is a flat screen TV with the boring repetitive CNN the only English channel (plus 2 German, 2 Italian and then remainder the French channels), an iron and ironing board and a stocked bar fridge with a couple of glasses.
A Tip
As to parking, it is possible to buy a long-term pass at the Cours Salaya car park. Go to the office on level -1 (that’s niveau or level minus one) near the car exit from this car park. Four days cost me €58.50 (in December 2011).
Room Tip: Room 22 on the second floor has great views
