“It is OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2010

Just back from the Hotel Medicis. Cheap and cheerful. Very easy access to anywhere as it is very near the railway station and a skip and a hop from a very good tram line. transport in Nice really cheap (mostly €1 to anywhere) Airport bus very close to Hotel.Room was all right - breakfast in room next to the Hotel just about acceptable. OK for price. Diti from Dublin

“Great Hotel, except the breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 June 2010

For the last minute price we paid (186 Euros for 3 nights) to stay at Hotel Medicis it was a real bargain. The room was quite small, but clean and comfortable; the bathroom was large and seemed newly renovated. The beds were comfortable and the TV worked well. The Staff was very helpful and polite. The only drawback was breakfast (we tried it once), served at a next door bar, it is not worth 9,50. Fortunately there are restaurants and cafés nearby, as well as a supermarket. If you don't want to take a taxi to the airport, there is a bus stop just 100 meters away, where you can take bus 99 for only 4 Euros. Ask the staff for timetables.

“It was fine”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2009

The upside for us was location. We needed a place close to Nice Ville train station. It is about a 3 minute walk. Everything else was fine-nothing great, nothing too horrible. It's a bit of a walk down to the center of town and the beach, but a pleasant one. The setup of the rooms is nice, with the bathroom being apart from the bedroom. The staff was helpful, the rooms were clean, and it was nice to have a balcony. The major drawbacks are the beds. In the twin rooms, the beds are actually more narrow than a standard twin. I've never encountered such a thing before. I nearly fell out of bed several times in the night, and I'm a little person! Also, the mattress pads have rubber lining which is very uncomfortable for sleeping. There is no wifi, and while most hotels have either wifi or a computer you can use in the lobby for free, this one charges 9 euros an hour to use their lobby computer. I'd probably try a different hotel in Nice before staying here again. But as I said, it was fine.

“Its ok but you can do better”

This hotel is good if you want somewhere close to the train station but it isnt centrally located for a couple days in Nice. The reception were friendly and spoke english however the rooms were a little bit rundown.

We stayed in this hotel over christmas and found it was a little cold when having a shower as the water sprayed everywhere. However, the bathroom did have a heated towel rack.

It took us over 30 minutes to walk to the old part of Nice which is the main touristy area. Many nicer looking hotels were passed along the way so i would suggest booking those hotels if you are going to stay in Nice for a couple days.

“A decent hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2008

We stayed in the Hotel Medicis for 5 nights in September 08 and found it to be a good, clean little hotel. The reception staff are friendly and helpful and despite my poor attempts to communicate in French took pity on me and spoke English.

It's a 20 minute walk to the pedestrianised streets and beach front - which I quite enjoyed, and it helped to walk off all the cheese I was eating. Remember to look up at the architecture, which is amazing - but also look down as there is alot of dog poo especially the further inland you get. Nice is packed full of dogs, mostly Yorkshire terriers with varying leg length. I saw one attacking a 'living statue' - which was incredibly funny.

All hotels in Nice are on roads - Medicis is on a sidestreet which has a scooter park opposite. I came to despise the ubiquitous scooter especially at 2am. Take earplugs if you are a light sleeper and keep the windows closed (there is an air conditioning switch near the door). if your holiday isnt complete with a view then dont stay here, instead go to the seafront.

We were given the room featured in the photographs. Despite being in need of new wallpaper it's a decent size with the basics. It doesn't have tea and coffee facilites but there is a cafe 20 yards up the pavement called 'Sunfish' cafe (I think) which is good - it's also where we had breakfast each day.

Breakfast is served until 10.30 am which is perfect if you are like me and want to sleep in - I'm not at work...so why get up early!? Besides, Nice is best in the evening. I did notice that the young waiter was wearing a Maradona ' Hand of God' Argentina 2 England 1 t-shirt which was attracting murmers from the English guests. Personally I wasn't bothered but perhaps it's not a good idea to tormet the people who are tipping you!

Defintely go to Nice. Try the Fidji salad at Maori restaurant at lunchtime - a large Lefte (beer) is massive though so be warned. Buy some fruit, bread, cheese and a 'padded blanket' from one of the little shops and have a picnic on the beach one evening. Oh, and go to the Old Town, wander around the tiny streets and have dinner in the square.

Take lots of money Nice is expensive - and remember the phrase 'Bonjour, mon Francais n'est pas tres bon' - you'll be forgiven straight away!

  • Liked — Helpful Staff that took notice of the 'do not disturb' sign
  • Disliked — noisy streets (but this is a problem with every hotel in Nice)
