“The pick of the litter in Nice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

This was my second stay in Nice. Last time I stayed to the east of Gare de Nice Ville (if you are looking at the station from the beach side), in the hotel district.

I found the location of this hotel to be much more satisfactory, and less out of the way. Rue de France is one of the main thoroughfares in Nice, and is 2 streets back from the promenade. It is about as central as you can get!

You walk out of the doors of the hotel, turn right, and walk straight into the heart of Nice. There are some terrific restaurants and shops along that strip (including the most unbelievably good macaroons, about 4 doors to the right when leaving the hotel).

The hotel itself was magnificent, and definitely deserves more than the stated 3 star rating. We were running early and arrived at the hotel 60min prior to the check in time. This was not a problem, and we were immediately given the keys to our room (which was lucky, as we needed to recover from the early morning train trip from Paris).

The decor is very bright, really quite a pleasant and uplifting place.

The lift was small, but we were able to go up with our bags one at a time. The room was quite a reasonable size, more than enough for 2 people. We were lucky enough to be able to book a deal through Wotif, where we received a free bottle of wine upon our arrival. This didn't seem to be a cheap bottle of plonk either - it was actually a very nice red!

The bed was very very comfortable, one of the best I have experienced in my travels, and the TV had the usual English language options such as CNN, BBC World etc.

The hotel does have some strict rules. Eating/Drinking is prohibited in the rooms (however we were allowed to take up our bottle of wine), and clothes washing is not permitted in the rooms. This didn't really bother us, and I would imagine that most hotels would have rules along these lines, but don't publicise it.

The staff were very helpful. We needed train tickets printed, and this was not a problem.

All in all we had a wonderful stay, and we will definitely be booking here when we return to Nice.

“Great value and location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

1st time for me in Nice and was recommended this place by family who had stayed here before. Read some of the reviews on here and they seem to be overly critical, this is not a 5 star hotel, but at the same time, it does not charge 5 star hotel prices and does not claim to be, so don't stay here and then poo poo it saying that its standards are low. I think they are just about right for a 3 star and for the price we paid.

Rooms are an ok size, but on the smaller side of ok, with the bathrooms equipped and clean. Service from check in to check out was great and there is free wifi too. Bed was a little soft for my preference. Decor was fine and I understand its being refreshed.

Overall, the best thing by far is the location, you are close to everything and you just can not fault this place as the prices are low and you are in the best place in town to expire both the new and old town. A great stay in a lovely city.

“Nice hotel but be aware.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

Nice hotel but I booked two balcony rooms through Venere, and booking response confirmed "Patio" so I was happy. When we arrived one room had a balcony but very small, the other none. There are only four rooms with balconies. Patio does not mean you have a balcony, but means it is a room facing the patio side of the hotel (as opposed to the street). I believe this is misleading.
The location is convenient as one street back from the front and with six storey buildings in between you are protected from the traffic noise.

All the staff are very nice and it is good to know there is always someone at reception.
There is a lift but it is too small to accommodate a wheelchair.
The main stair case is protected by doors with smoke release holders but you hope fire is not in reception as it would make the exit tricky.
Room was quite fun really, knowing that it will be renovated next year!

The fan noise and vibration feels just like cruise ship. You dream of a new port for the morning.
It is nice to know the plastic mattress covers are keeping the mattress clean. Fortunately not hot so did not notice the seaminess they would cause in summer.
Room and hotel very clean.

Air conditioning in room, though due to autumn weather not used.
Great tv and bedside lights.
Bathroom is well lit by a large and very bright fluorescent light beside the basin and next to the very large fan heater combined with hair dryer.
Bright White wall tiles. Bath was recently repainted which makes it less slippery as there are no handgrips on the bath or wall. My father was afraid to use bath in case he could not get out so was a bit smelly by end of week. Bath was safe enough for drowning as it is too short to slide under water.
They provide plenty of towels which is useful to dry up the water that gets on the floor when you are showering as there is no shower screen.

There is a safe but there was no key supplied. Nice not to be tempted to drink from the fridge as no fridge. No kettle either.
Two dining size chairs provided.

Nice having free wifi without passwords.

Breakfast offers two choices: 3 euros dry croissant and drink, or 11 euros boiled egg and ham. After first morning we ate at nice cafe on the front which is set down sufficiently that you do not see the sea and it reduces the traffic noise.

There is a bus stop just opposite the Westminster hotel with a great selection of buses where you can travel anywhere for one euro! We paid this one euro and went to Cannes. That is great value. Also to Vence. Tourist office is only 100m east along the front and they have a brilliant bus map.
All in all hotel is convenient but should be two star rated as found.

Room Tip: Patio side is on the sunny side away from the street. No idea how you guarantee a balcony.

Dear Sir,
Thanks a lot for your stay last week and your detailed review.
Please take notice that we don't commercialize rooms with balcony through the intermediate website, nor directly by the hotel. As you underlined, we've got very few rooms of this kind.
You booked 2 twin-bedded rooms facing the patio. We accomodated you on the highest floor in the rooms close to each other. Fortunately, one of them has a balcony:)! (the unique twin room with a balcony in our hotel)
We've carefully read your experience with fan and bath. We could propose to your father a room with a shower if we knew his preferency, so he could be less afraid of using it.
It's possible to rent the safe and take the key at the reception desk.
The rooms you stayed in, will be renovated in winter 2012, we hope that you'll be back to discover them.
We're happy to know that you enjoyed our location close to the sea, the pedestrian street, restraurants & shopping area. Thank you for enjoying the cleanliness of the rooms, free wifi connection, television and our staff.
Looking forward to welcoming you again,
Kindest regards

“Excellent Choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2011

We visited this quiet, tranquil hotel in June and also October 2011. My wife and I really enjoy this hotel. Location is excellent, less that 2 minutes to the seafront and about 10 minutes walk to the Place Massena and nearby main bus station. In June we stayed in one of the older rooms. It was not the most modern but clean and absolutely fine. Our stay did not include breakfast so we had this various locations in the close vicinity. In June we were fortunate to get one of the refurbished rooms. It was modern, bright, comfortable and clean. This time self service continental breakfast was included in the price. There was a good selection of foods to choose from and everything was extremely fresh. A lady was in attendance and the displays of food were continually refreshed. All staff were most polite and helpful at all times. There is a small bar in the hotel (reasonably priced) and it was very pleasant to sit out in their small, peaceful courtyard at night for one last glass of Rosie. Well done H d l F, hope to see you again next season.

Room Tip: Request one of the refurbished rooms but don't be put off if you don't get one.

“A good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

My self and my eight year old daughter had never been to Nice, so we really wanted to stay in a central location with good transport links. Hotel de la Fontaine is exactly what we needed.

We travelled from the airport to the hotel using the bus. It was quick and easy and costs 4 Euros per person. The bus was number 98 and you get off on the Promenade, just pass the famous Negresco hotel. From there a short walk (just 5 minutes) to the hotel. Please do not take a taxi - which is around 30 Euros!!!!! The emailed the staff at reception to enquire about this and they helpfully gave me some advice including directions, and a map. They were very helpful indeed.

Our room was on the 4th floor, easily accessed by the lift, I suppose I was hoping for a refurbished room and although we were not allocated one, our room and bathroom was clean and presentable.

The main shopping area, train station, the beach and old town are all within walking distance from this hotel and you will find a good selection of restaurants with different cuisine nearby as well.

I would have liked tea/coffee making facilities in the room, but you can request this/collect from reception if you wish. The buffet breakfast offered enough choice and is appropriate for the price of the hotel.

We enjoyed our stay and would certainly return
