Our experience of the Excelsior Hotel, its staff and manger was a case study in poor service and terrible attitude--in the worst combination possible.
I reserved a Prestige Room for one night (tonight) through an on-line trusted reservation site. When we arrived (after almost 21 hours of traveling from the US) we were told that there was not a room available and that we were booked at a nearby hotel "in town." The reason we reserved the Hotel Excelsior was because it was walking distance to the train station. The young woman at the desk could offer no reason for the switch other than the room was not available. The manager she called would not let her switch us into a different room at the hotel which was available and hid from the matter by being unavailable except to the receptionist. The hotel refused to give us a refund, which we had asked for politely. Her attitude and training were poor, to say the least. There was plenty of time to contact us before the check-in time. I had even confirmed the reservation by email a number of days before we arrived.

Tired after long hours of plane and train travel and with the refusal to give us a refund, and dinner reservations waiting, we went to the other hotel. (The desk manager there is MUCH BETTER trained, by the way.) We had to argue with the receptionist and the telephone-based manager to have our transportation accommodated to the train station the next day. They originally told us we could ride the tram back to the station the next morning--with all our luggage, of course. This was exactly the scenario we had sought to avoid in the first place by reserving with a hotel within easy walking distance to the train station. We persisted and received a lift to the new hotel from a representative of the Excelsior Hotel's cleaning service who observed all of this interaction and a taxi ride to the train station the next day. We should never have had to fight for that gesture given the refusal to honor the original reservation.

Excelsior's customer service and reservation policy like this rates a ZERO star. Find a different hotel in Nice.

The hotel is very well situated, pretty old style building with basic standard rooms. I enjoyed our stay. However we had some trouble with the cleaning staff, since they rush into the room without knocking, have a tendency to leave the balcany doors open even when hot, and they didn´t leave any new soaps and shampoos in a weeks stay. I discovered the worst back home. Something was taken from my suitcase, and it must have happened in the hotelroom. It´s very unlikely that it was by anybody else but the staff, and my quess would be the cleaners.

So even though the hotel itself was most satsifactory for the price (we would rate this 4 stars/ very good), I´m forced to give poor rating because of the above.

Arrived after spending all day travelling from Rome via train. Room was dirty( I have pictures to validate) , room faced the noisy street with scaffolding outside window. Air conditioning was not working. Drain in shower was plugged. When approached staff on desk was told for a fee of another 30 euros I could up-date to a better suite!! Was this a scam to increase the bottom line?? She was rude and stated it wasn't hot !
Pointless to pursue with her, spent a sleepless night to the sounds of blaring horns and traffic Certainly not the picture or positive view of Nice. Also, this reservation was made 2 months prior to travel !!! CAUTION don't believe or take at face value what hotels say on Websites. It was the worst experience in three weeks of travel throught Italy and France.

This hotel was the perfect location to return our rental car and then leave the next day on a train. The room was decorated with strange colors and there was scaffolding on the outside of the building. The room was large enough and it was only a 20 minute walk to the downtown area and the sea. Staff were helpful and with a little upgrade it could be a nice hotel. I would recommend this hotel if you have an early morning train, but otherwise there must be more lovely places in the city. The garden looked nice, so a room facing it may have been more lovely.
