Unfortunately, due to my poor eyesight I clicked on "August" instead of "October" for date of stay at the Hotel Lafayette so withdrew it in order to correct the error. So here goes with the same review again: Hope all the people who, like myself, had such a horrible experience at the Hotel Univers haven't been put off holidaying in France or Nice. I returned to Nice in October & stayed at the Hotel Lafayette in the Rue de l'Hotel des Postes. The contrast could not have been greater. Instead of being met on arrival with a disdainful look as at the Univers and being made to stand and fill in an A4 form with information they already had, I was greeted with a lovely smile, immediately offered a seat and made to feel very welcome . My case was carried for me This kindness continued throughout my stay. In the large room everything worked: TV, safe, doorkey. Non slip tiles on the shower room floor! Such a difference! At breakfast other guests were expressing delight at all the
thoughtful little touches available. The courtesy tray in one's room (drinks & biscuits). The delicious breakfasts, fresh bread, croissants & fruit, etc., plus a facility for boiling one's eggs for a time of one's choice. There was freshly made coffee in coffee pots instead of the machine at the Univers which rarely worked. If requested a jug of freshly warmed milk was brought willingly brought to the table to top up the coffee. I paid about half the price I paid at the Univers (even allowing for the seasonal adjustment) so very good value. I visit Nice every two months. Going back in a few weeks time and of course have reserved my room at the Hotel Lafayette & look forward to many more holidays there as it's position couldn't be better - near tramway, buses, shops and a short walk from the sea and the Old Town - but above all for the wonderful welcoming atmosphere. The day after I arrived at the Univers (19 August) was my friends birthday so in the morning I bought an expensive gateaux at a good patisserie nearby but as it was so hot in my room I couldn't keep it so decided to buy another later in the day at a patisserie nearer my friend's house. I didn't know what else to do with it so gave it to the bespectacled man on the reception desk saying it was for the staff. But none of the staff ever mentioned it.... Strange?
