This hotel is a large stylish 19th century house well located in the centre of Nice. It is a pleasant building with ornate plaster ceilings and furniture nicely matching the period. The staff always tried to be helpful during our week's stay. The rooms were comfortable with a small balcony overlooking the street. I particularly liked having a room kettle with daily tea/coffee ,etc supplied. Bathroom had been recently refurbished and was very good with double sinks, albeit bath/ shower small. Also, the bathroom was well supplied with all possible daily needs. Like all the rooms their is an obvious space limitation for buildings so grand. Beds were ok as were the bed coverings. However, for us there were two obvious disadvantages being the lift and the restaurant. The single lift was very small, perhaps as to be expected in such a building, but this meant regular waiting whilst in use. It only broke down briefly the once during our stay, but it is a strenuous climb at days end to the 4th floor, alone the top 5th However, it was the restaurant which was the real problem in being too small to cater for everyone at the 8.00 am peak. It was modestly furnished and the food was of the best quality, although choice a bit limited if staying a week, but its size meant it could rarely cope. On our first morning it was total chaos, with people squeezed in on every chair and corner, tripping over one another trying to get food and yet more guests were coming and just giving up on any attempt. To add to this in whatever space there was it was piled with finished plates, cups and dishes and the single breakfast lady could just not reach to clearing the tables besides also trying to keep food supplied. If the following morning had been on the same scale, it would have been the local "Subway" for our breakfast the remainder of the week. Yet, at 8.00am on the Sunday morning, we had this breakfast room to ourselves, whereas on most days previous guests had stayed just long enough to gobble back their food rather than sit to enjoy. It is for this reason that I would not dare recommend this hotel to anyone.
Nice is a lovely city, and this is our 4th weeks visit in 5 years. November and March are good times of year to visit, when weather remains lovely and hotel prices are well off their peak .
