My experience with the Mercure chain of hotels in Europe is that the quality of the properties can be quite hit-and-miss. Fortunately the Mercure Nice Marche aux Fleurs was a hit, providing excellent value and a comfortable stay in a good location.
Located directly across the Quai des Etats-Unis from Opera Plage (Opera Beach), this cozy hotel offers boutique ambience without the boutique prices. There is no parking on site unless you're lucky enough to get a spot on the street, but underground parking is available just a couple of blocks away for the cost of roughly 25 euros per 24-hour period.
The hotel is close to Old Nice, and shops, restaurants, and boulangeries abound - there is no shortage of places to eat. The hotel does serve breakfast but unlike many hotels it is not included in the price of the room, but rather costs about 15 Euros. We chose to find ourselves a nice nearby boulangerie that served a hot, fresh breakfast for less money than the hotel charged for their continental buffet. If the shops and markets of Old Nice lose their appeal the hotel is only two blocks from the newly reconstructed Place Massena and the gateway to more modern shopping.
We chose a "premium" room on the main floor of the hotel for several of reasons - first, it was a larger room with a king size bed. Second, since there is no elevator in the hotel we were able to avoid humping our luggage up and down stairs. Third, the bathroom was larger, with better fixtures. Unfortunately being on the main floor meant we overlooked a busy side street that was used for scooter parking and even though the hotel did a good job of soundproofing, we were still woken by a two-stroke symphony in the morning. I think maybe a room on the west side of the hotel would have been quieter.
In summary we were very happy with our stay. Staff was friendly and very helpful, the room was quite large and comfortable, and the location was perfect.
Room Tip: Premium rooms on the first floor cost a bit more but are much larger and feature better-equipped bat...
