The efficient, knowledgeable and friendly staff (with one or two exceptions), excellent location near the old town, the Promenade, and good restaurants, and the clean and comfortable rooms have made me and my family feel welcome on many occasions. Recommendations for restaurants and nearby attractions have been top notch.
On our last visit, however, we were invited at check-out to have our bill charged to our credit card in dollars. I declined, but the transaction was still somehow processed in dollars - at a rate that cost me about $90 more, because my credit card has a very favorable rate and no transaction fees. When I realized what had happened later that day I expected the hotel to promptly reverse the transaction or help me out. Unfortunately they initially rather unpleasantly said it was my fault and there was nothing they could do. After numerous phone calls with four different staff members and the owner, a return visit to the hotel, and submission of receipts and my credit card statement, the hotel said they would try to get Global Blue/ DCC Currency Choice to refund the difference in exchange rates. After three months, the hotel finally put me in touch with Global Blue in Bratislava who immediately offered to refund the difference, saying they had just learned about my problem from the hotel. I'll happily go back to the Grimaldi anyway, but want to warn travelers to check the rate before agreeing to pay in dollars - a practice that is becoming increasingly frequent in supermarkets and shops as well. Note that some credit cards will charge a foreign transaction fee even if you have paid overseas in dollars.
