We stayed at the Ellington for 5 nights in November 2011 on holiday.
We had road facing room; it was nice to have a view over the road with three large windows. The room and bathroom are a bit dated.
As other people have mentioned there is no lock on the safe, this is a first for us in a four star hotel. I would think that keeping our valuables safe would be in their best interest!
Breakfast was limited and repetitive with a hot breakfast charged at an extra 5E. The "fresh fruit" was canned (when I asked for fresh fruit she said they had it in the kitchen for "later", she did however bring out fruit skewers which was the highlight of breakfast for me). The coffee is out of a dispenser machine that makes all forms of coffee, none of which I found enjoyable. The breakfast service was slow with your table only being cleared once you had vacated your table. The breakfast room is however attractive.
There is an comfortable bar area in the lobby with their happy hour with half priced drinks. The hotel constantly plays jazz (Hotel Ellington as in Duke Ellington) as background music which can be irritating (I'm sure I'm not the only person who doesn't particularly enjoy a lot of jazz).
The location of the hotel is good, it is a short pleasant walk to the main shopping road, busses, market and the promenade.
The front desk was very helpful with bus time tables and recommendations for restaurants.
This hotel was good but not great. Despite the shortfalls we enjoyed our stay in Nice and didn’t spend too much time at the hotel it was good enough as a base for our stay.
