The Michelin Guide used to count for something, so when we needed a simple hotel for a one night stay we picked this Cecil, also because everything else was booked out.
The hotel looks nice enough from the outside, but that's about it. Rooms and hallways are in dire need of redecorating. Beds are just clean enough to sleep in but not really inviting. The view from our room was on a shabby courtyard, with rooms of other hotels and guests in plain view. Bathroom was in style: shabby, not really clean and dating from the mid seventies. Airconditioning was functioning but the remote (and other controls) were missing so temperature was lukewarm with a very low fan setting: not so cool. Worst was the smell: the entire place smelled like vegetable soup/low rent retirement home.
When I saw the owner using his bare hands to pick pineapple from a can, this was the last straw. The feeling of uncleanliness made me itch. Needless to say that we skipped breakfast and left asap in the morning.
Parking is difficult but that's no fault of the hotel. Location is great in a quite street near the beach and town centre.
I believe that a simple hotel can be very pleasant, but this had nothing to do with simple. It was run down. A pity really, because with a little TLC this could be a great place. Now it's Fawlty Towers without the humour.
