“Deserves a Better Rep!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2011

The Cecil may not be elegant, but it's quiet, convenient and has everything you need, including an electric outlet that is actually near the writing desk, an elevator, and a real trash basket . And the location can't be beat --a few minutes from the beach and the train station.

“Just fine”

Liked the town, but as far as the hotel goes it isn't all that. The owners need an urgent reality check, otherwise just fine. Not super clean, if dust and dirt bug, then please go somewhere else, also don't expect much from the service.

“Cheap but worn!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2008

We stayed at Hotel Cecil for one night in march and one night was enough for us. The building looked nice from the outside but was very worn on the inside. The staff was nice but did not speak much english. The rooms was OK, but not very clean. The floors in the room was all moisty. The bathroom was old, worn and not very clean and there was no soap. The elevator was to small for our baby stroller so we had to carry it up and down the stairs. We had to pay extra for a very simple breakfast. My advise is that you have your breakfast in a café or a restaurant.

“One of the worst hotels i've ever stayed in: Faulty Towers with a 'u'”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2006

The Michelin Guide used to count for something, so when we needed a simple hotel for a one night stay we picked this Cecil, also because everything else was booked out.

The hotel looks nice enough from the outside, but that's about it. Rooms and hallways are in dire need of redecorating. Beds are just clean enough to sleep in but not really inviting. The view from our room was on a shabby courtyard, with rooms of other hotels and guests in plain view. Bathroom was in style: shabby, not really clean and dating from the mid seventies. Airconditioning was functioning but the remote (and other controls) were missing so temperature was lukewarm with a very low fan setting: not so cool. Worst was the smell: the entire place smelled like vegetable soup/low rent retirement home.

When I saw the owner using his bare hands to pick pineapple from a can, this was the last straw. The feeling of uncleanliness made me itch. Needless to say that we skipped breakfast and left asap in the morning.

Parking is difficult but that's no fault of the hotel. Location is great in a quite street near the beach and town centre.

I believe that a simple hotel can be very pleasant, but this had nothing to do with simple. It was run down. A pity really, because with a little TLC this could be a great place. Now it's Fawlty Towers without the humour.

  • Liked — Distance to the town centre
  • Disliked — ....where shall I start

I was in this hotel a year ago. and it was not so good, because the rooms were not all clean and one morning we had a mouse in the breakfast-room.
