Bastide St Mathieu is a very special place. We found it via the internet and when we arrived to spend a few days there with some friends, we were delighted with our choice.
The house is simply stunning and set in beautiful grounds full of lavender, olive trees and flowers. The pool area is lovely and there are plenty of areas outside to sit and relax. The cuisine d'ete is the perfectly shaded and well equipped area where breakfast is served....and lunch and snacks too, if required. Bill, our host kept us plentifully supplied and nothing was too much trouble.
The rooms in the hotel are beautifully decorated and furnished, the bedrooms being spacious and air-conditioned, everything being of the highest quality.
One thing to note, the Bastide St Mathieu is a chambre d'hote, not an hotel, so don't go there expecting full service. What you get is warm, welcoming hospitality from your hosts, who will do their utmost to meet the needs of their guests.
We had a splendid time and look forward to returning very soon.

My husband and I and some friends recently stayed at the Bastide Saint Mathieu and we loved it.

Firstly it is in a great part of the world…. places like St Paul de Vence, Nice and Cannes are close and there are any number of good restaurants locally and a little further afield,

It is a lovely house elegant and beautifully decorated, with spacious bedrooms, good bed linen and towels and a wonderful array of fragrances in the bathroom.

It doesn’t have a restaurant however Bill Colegrave the owner (and all round good egg) was happy to whistle up lovely light lunches round the pool, open copious bottles of wine, and one evening arranged for a chef to cook dinner for us which had by candlelight in the cuisine d’ete

The gardens are very attractive full of lavender, russian sage and grasses and has is a boule piste and a good pool.

Simply perfect for a few lazy summer days (and I am sure for lazy winter ones when the logs fires are alight)…..next time we might book the whole place and take even more chums

A trip to remember. Gorgeous setting in the hills, Fantastic house. Great hosts who made it seem like home. Pure luxury. Beautiful air conditioned room and a pool you could lie by for a week. Nothing was ever too much trouble - the outside fridge was always very well stocked. Will take the golf clubs and tennis racket next time.

Day trip to Keller Beach in Cap D'Antibes a must. Also eat at L'Ecole de Fils - very quirky French and won't cost an arm and a leg!

The beautiful Bastide st Mathieu is at once less and more than a great hotel and that is its charm and that is we and we met all wanted to stay longer and longer. It is not a full service hotel with hot and cold running waiters; indeed often you serve yourselves with drinks and I was happily helping with breakfast.
It is instead a 'houseparty hotel'...people of all nationalities and backgrounds plus the owners sit until late into the night chatting over the fine Valcolombe wines, sometimes go out for lunch together, exchange ideas and enjoy a glorious private house atmosphere into which almost everyone fits in....we guests feel we are all contributing to the party for others.
The Bastide itself, in its own parkland of olive, lavender and fruit orchards, is quite exceptionally romantic, wonderfully decorated with pieces from all over the world and the rooms (just six of them) are all huge, magnificent but also wonderfully welcoming and comfortable.
This is the future for counrty hotels....and in such a wonderful place.
