“Nightmare start, average finish”

I'm going to try to keep emotion out of this and just stick to the facts.

Service

We arrived and were told there were no spaces left in the car park. The receptionist helpfully suggested I book a space next time. I don't remember there being an option to do so when booking.

We had to find a public car park late at night. The one we found was not cheap, but still ended up costing less than the hotel car park, which we did manage to book for our third night.

I'm getting ahead of myself. When I went to pick up the car the next morning, the wing mirror was smashed. Welcome to Cannes.

Room

The window looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the hotel opened. Apart from that, it was pretty tidy and clean looking. Fairly good size too, but definitely the smallest we stayed in out of the four places we booked into on our France road trip. Also the most expensive.

Breakfast

Expensive. We went to a cafe around the corner.

Location

Convenient, definitely. Just a ten minute walk to the best bits. It is in a slightly seedy part of Cannes though.

Overall impression

It's not a four star hotel. Fine for a brief stay, but we felt sort of uncomfortable. Probably because the stay got off to such an awful start, and that feeling never really went away. I've given it 3/5, but it's close to a 2.

“Very Poor Hotel, Would never return”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights from 10 to 12 AUgust 2010, as an extension to a longer stay in Nice, Le Grimaldi Hotel. We were equally disappointed by the two hotels in Cote D'Azure. It is incredible the rated frech hoteliers are charging for very poor quality.
To start with the instructions for reaching this hotel, I should say that the map on the website indicates the way to get from the hotel down to Croisette, instead of from the Croisette up to the hotel. We were astonished by this, and we only got to the address by chance and due to my husband's good orientation skills.
Although we arrived at 2 pm, our room was not ready. This was not such a problem, however the fact that the room we got smelled of cigarrettes so awfully we could throw up, was a problem. We asked for a different room, and so we had to wait for another 30-45 minutes until a new room was ready.
When we entered the second room we actually thought these guys were playing a bad joke on us. The carpet was all stainned and looking very old and un-maintained, while the windows looked like there were from another century: all dirty, muddy actually, ripped, uuhhh, it was a nightmere. When we asked the receptionist to come and see how it looked and asked the lady if she thought this is a 4 star hotel, she replied very serenely: "We don't do stars, we do rates!"
I guess this is what this hotel is about: 125 Euros per night for a mediocre 3 star hotel.
Don't expect to much of it: the first day we only had 2 towels. The next day they figured they should do better. Napkinds? When over, handle it.
Cleaningness of bath: why bother?
It all looks good in the pictures: nice and modern, but in fact it is dusty and needs refurbishing. Which, by the way, the receptionist, told us they are planning next year.
TV channels only in French and German.
One last thing: when leaving we were asked if we enjoyed the stay. When I replied what had happened, the guy said he will offer us the 3 Euro water on the minibar for free. Aren't there guys funny?
Go look for a different hotel.

“A hidden gem, that won't cost you an arm or a leg”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2010

Following a busy week in Paris,we took the TGV to Cannes to explore the area. The weather was brilliant. Cannes is picturesque and extremely lively. It has older narrow streets, charming restaurants and terrific sandy beaches. We felt very safe in Cannes and instantly knew our way around town. There are many pricey places to stay in Cannes however if you don't mind a 5 minute walk north of the main beachfront/harbour, you'll discover this gem, Hotel Montaigne. Montaigne is compact but in the process of doubling its room capacity and adding a pool and spa by summer 2011.
It's close to a Bank ATM's, cafe's and restaurants too. Being tucked around the corner from a major street, there is little traffic noise to bother you, day or night. You're 3 minutes walking distance to the Gare (train station) so this is an ideal location to make as a home base to travel up and down the coastal area . Monoprix is right across from the Gare, so picking up cheap food and drink for day trips or beach snacking is very convenient.
The reception staff (on duty 24 x 7) are very friendly, and cheerfully converse in either French or English. Alexandria was especially helpful offerring us tips on restaurants and shopping destinations. They have tourist info, maps and booklets in the lobby which we found useful.
Our rooms were ready (very nice after 6 hours on the train) and we were quickly checked in. We had requested rooms, with an adjoining door . We were able to keep tabs on our kids in their room while my wife and I enjoyed some occasional privacy in our room. Rooms were cozy and clean. The air conditioned room featured a comfortable bed,(although pillows are too soft), TV was a smallish flat screen and it had a modern bathroom and shower. We appreciated the in-room safe and free wi-fi. (Request your wi-fi password from the reception). In the main lobby there is free PC access, a big screen TV and a nice bar and lounge area.
Our stay included the breakfast service. Food was surprisingly varied, plentiful, fresh and tasty. Dining out is expensive for families, so this was a welcome treat indeed. A husband and wife team made us wonderful omelettes, cooked to order, every morning.
Montaigne is an excellent value desination if you're looking for clean, comfortable lodging. It's unlikely you'll meet any movie stars staying here but you'll also not experience the wallet draining high prices like along the beachfront Hotels either. We'd certainly return in the future.

“Clean place to stay near downtown”

We booked this hotel pretty last minute during the film festival. We got a great deal. The hotel was conveniently located - 8 minute walk to the Palais with lots of shops and restaurants around.

The room was clean and so was the bathroom. The upholstery was nice. Bed was comfortable. They had free wifi but it was kind of slow.

Nothing extraordinary but we would stay here again

We stayed here for 3 nights.
The hotel is within easy distance of the sea, and town centre.
I am pleased we had a room in the back of the hotel, as I think the rooms at the front would have been noisy with the main road outside.
A big bonus was the free internet provided.
Our room was of a good size and very clean.
We found the receptionist (Christophe?) very helpful and welcoming us by name each time.
Breakfast was continental style, we had ours in the garden each day. A lovely way to start the day.
I would recommend this hotel for good value, there are many super chic hotels in Cannes, with Super chic prices, but this is excellent value.
Highly recommended, will definitely go back.
