After being turned on to the Ibis hotels by a friend of mine, I booked at two different locations during my recent trip to Southern France.
I stayed at the Ibis in Avignon and enjoyed it. The room was tiny but it was clean and the staff were friendly. The breakfast was great as well.
I figured I would enjoy Cannes. If it's good enough for Cameron Diaz, the city had to be good enough for me.
I called before booking to make sure there was parking. I had rented a car and didn't want to be stuck without a spot.
I got to the hotel and checked in. The parking lot had been torn up and was being worked on. I was referred to a public parking lot down the street. Luckily there was one space left.
As we got to our room there was a strange smell of sewage. I think it was because the drains had not had water down them.
Even though it made two bad first impressions, I figured it would be fine. When booking I had assumed that it was right outside the main area of Cannes and was overlooking the Sea. My assumption was wrong however because a hotel called "The Ibis Plage La Bocca by the Sea" was actually far from the sea...we were seperated by a few nice looking railway lines.
We drove into Cannes to look around which took quite a while. For one, we were far away. Two, the neighborhood was scary so we stuck to main roads. This Ibis was formerly a Mecure (in the Accor hotel group) and made sense why they took the premium name away.
After exploring we decided we were leaving. The receptionist was nice enough to call and switch our reservation to the Ibis in Sophia Antipolis. This Ibis was fantastic with a nice restaurant and peaceful surroundings.
My advise, don't stay here.
