“Another gem is sold to the Emir of Qatar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2008

We had the best vacation ever. We stayed in an appartement with sea view in c block. Fantastic! The appartements are big enough. The interior not up to date, but clean. The appartements were cleaned every day. The breakfast was simple but effective. We didnt eat lunch or dinner here. What we heared, it was a good decision. We ate lunch at the beach (2 mn walk) and dinner we had in Antibes, Nice, Juan les Pins, Veille Antibes, etc.
You need a car to get around.
We wanted to book for next year. Sadly to find out, that the emir of Qatar bought the premissis. So it will be demolished soon.

“be very careful if going to this hotel !”

This was my third visit to france in 8 years, but it was here at this hotel that I first met a truly nasty and unpleasant experience with any French person. First, not one of the staff spoke a word of english during our stay of 3 days. We managed to ask and were told using a guest as an interpreter that breakfast was included in the room. We were therefore surprised when presented with a huge bill (way out of proportion to the quality of the actual breakfast served, which includes watery runny eggs and horrible coffee), and when we explained that two days previously we had been told that the charge was included, the nasty receptionist (a young woman named Charlotte) said "that is [--]". Although we were pleasantly surprised at this sudden display of english vocabulary, I have never met such a nasty and disrespectful group of staff. Also, the hotel advertises that it's rooms include kitchenettes (whcih they do, and are OK), it just neglects to mention the large sign inside the kitchenette explaining that any use of it entails a 50 Euro charge.
Although the rooms and pool area are quite nice, the terrible service and greedy lying made us swear to never return .

“Not Recommended”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2007

I have to agree, for the most part, with the previous posts. This is a lovely property, indeed, a bit of a distance from the train station. There is a shuttle, although I happened upon it by accident. I'm not quite sure where others found out about it. From what I could tell, they made advance reservations.

The grounds are immaculate. Beautifully kept gardens over the entire property, but, in my experience, this is perhaps the only positive. I found the staff, specifically the manager, Bernard, to be extremely unhelpful and condescending throughout my stay. I was traveling as a single female, and had enjoyed every bit of my time in France, save this hotel. I'm guessing that there was a standard pamphlet given out upon check-in that I was not given, as the meal procedure is that you present previously purchased 'meal tickets' (as well as make reservations) to eat in the main hall. It is indeed what my idea of a lively retirement community would offer. The clientele was all of retired age.

The perimiter of the pool is surrounded by a protective gate, with the sunbeds around the outside. Curious, as there were very few small children or families present.

I did not witness the loud music at all hours, and was in the C block, however, on my last night, a family with small children did check into the room next to mine. The walls were like paper, and all previously experienced quiet and tranquility were lost.

I decided to check out early, and upon approval from the manager, proceeded to contact expedia a few days later to confirm the refund. This is where things got even more bizarre. 'Bernard', the manager, refused (!) to answer the phone call from expedia, therefore postponing my refund by at least a week. I was told to call back no less than three times before he finally came to the phone and confirmed the refund. My original stay was for 9 nights. I ended up staying two. It has been no less than three weeks since that time, and I am still deliberating with Expedia for my refund. Needless to say, all things considered, there are MANY other hotels in the area.... I highly suggest looking into those first before booking here.

“Not sure about this one...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2006

Although I agree with other reviewers that this is a unique place it's for other reasons!

The rooms/residences in Le Galion are very nice ~ like mini apartments and the grounds are really lovely. Staff are very helpful ~ did their best with our pidgeon French and made sure we had everything we needed.

However, even though I am 40 and my husband is 46 we felt like teenagers here. I would guess that the next nearest in our age group were people in their late 60's. Nothing wrong with this but it's something you need to be aware of if you're looking for a 'light-hearted, fun' holiday ~ you won't find it here!

Dinner is served just for 1 hour and is a set meal ~ the food was fine ~ didn't blow us away but filled a hole. We sussed out that lunch was the main meal time here ~ same thing, a set menu, but cooked food rather than the light salad served to us the previous evening.

The pool was lovely and there were lots of sunbeds. There is entertainment every evening too ~ waltzing one night and Suduko the next...hhmmm....

The 'catches' if you like, that we weren't aware of either, were that it was a taxi journey (we had no car) to the town of approx €25 each way! Also, they advertise that they have a private beach but they forget to tell you that it's €19 per person per day to sit on it! I know we were in the South of France and things are expensive but I suppose we just weren't prepared for these things.. We found the Le Cesar restaurant very nice if you're looking for somewhere to eat in walking distance ~ just a couple of moments from the gate.

Also, the reviewer that spoke about the blaring music was spot on ~ we went to bed around midnight on the Friday and the Saturday and were woken by music that sounded like it was in our room it was so loud. It was going on from around 2 until 6 in the morning both nights. I'm not sure if it was from the houses opposite or from kids in cars but it was massively disturbing and meant we got very little sleep both nights.

We were in block C ~ not sure if blocks A or B would hear it as badly but maybe just something to bear in mind.

We wouldn't stay here again ~ not for a few years anyway!!

“Pleasant location, away from the crowds”

This is a pleasant place to stay with lovely landscaped grounds, great views of the mountains, clean basic rooms and plenty of parking. Although we didnt get a chance to have a swim the pool looked nice and well cared for. Antibes is just a short drive up the road.
However the Hotel/Residence is not clear about breakfast entitlement. Breakfast is provided but we were not told that it was not included in the room price until we checked out which was extremely annoying considering it was 10 euros per person per day. Also the road that leads into the property has a problem with youths at night that like to congregate and blare music out from their cars until the early hours.
