“A Sweet Lovely Hotel In Avignon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

We stayed here for two nights in October 2011 and were very impressed. The location is just fantastic, right across from the Palais de Papes. The service is very friendly and welcoming (I know people worry about this in France but we have had nothing but wonderful experiences). The rooms are different--not luxurious but rather quaint and romantic. The decor is old-fashioned but the amenities are still there--wi-fi (free by the way), comfortable beds, etc. The bathroom products were Dr. Haushka and local lavender soap, which was very cool. This is another hotel (see my review of the Greenwich) where the room was separated from the hallway by an additional door, i.e. halllway, door to room, foyer, door to bedroom. I love this configuration because it keeps out the hallway noise. The room service pastries are to die for (you're in france, don't bother dieting, there will be butter). Our first night there we had the sommelier select a bottle of wine and bring it to our room with a little assortment of olives and nuts, we didn't specify a price, which made me a little nervous, but he selected something very reasonable and wonderful. Only bad note: the restaurant setting is great and very romantic but I found the food just so so, particularly for the price.

“Another era in luxury”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Let me tell you right away that luxury does not come cheap but it comes with style. You will enter the pedestrians only zone and your car will be parked ( 25 euros a day ) and the hotel is 580 Euros a pop with breakfast which is served in a well lighted room by a waiter that takes your egg order. The rooms are roomy ( luxury superior ) and are tended twice a day. The shower is the kind that you don't want to get out of it. The bath oils are a real treat. Take the rooms that you go without the elevator to see the grandeur of this ancient hostel of the Popes era. The restaurant that we ate our supper is a little bit on the nouvelle cuisine side, tasty but a little pretentious. It is on the whole a very nice refuge after a visit to the bridge d' Avignon which can be quiet a challenge when it is windy. A hot chocolate or a glass of champagne will pick you up.

“Nice, historic and convenient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

The building is centuries old, and is literally a stone's throw from the Palais des Papes. The decor of the rooms are very old fashioned, but charming in their own way. The bathrooms are very large, with a separate shower stall. Large twin sinks. All the hardware seems to be old British... The light switches have dimming functions, and it took me a little while to figure them out.

The TV is framed so that it looks like an old-fashioned mirror when it's turned off. The phone is cordless, and wifi is available.

Breakfast is pretty good. Lunch at the restaurant is pretty reasonable, too. One can take tea in the afternoon either in the interior or outdoor courtyard. Very nice atmosphere.

Hotel concierge is very helpful and can point you to the right restaurant or shops.

Only downside is hauling luggage yourself... the rooms are arranged around the interior courtyard, but the four sides are not on the same level... it kinda spirals upward. Getting around is a little annoying.

“The perfect place to stay in Avignon”

A beautiful bulding, with large, superbly decorated rooms. The restaurant is a delight, staff friendly and helpful.Couldn't be closer to the Palace of the Popes, situated in a charming part of the city, with narrow, cobbled streets, and close to the city square.

“Such a disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

We had been travelling for 5 weeks throughout England, France and Italy and thought we would spend our last night in Europe somewhere really special, so chose to stay at La Mirande. The first thing we noticed was the small dark and dingy lift. I appreciate that French lifts are small, however the lighting in it was so bad you couldn't read the menu that was displayed on the wall. Nevertheless, we got out on the 2nd floor into a corridor, badly scuffed and with chipped paint, that smelt musty and of old food. We passed the open door of the cleaners cupboard to see the filthiest mop, not too impressing. Still, arrived in our room which was decorated in the traditional french toile fashion, and was happy to find a dish of beautiful figs and nougat. The sheets on the bed were lovely, and the room, despite the earlier mop, was clean. The atmosphere in Avignon was wonderful as it was the last weekend of the festival, buskers and actors strolling the streets and singing on every corner. We asked for a recommendation for dinner, and despite the assurances of the lovely desk staff that the restaraunt was very close we were unable to find it with their directions (had managed to find the other 35 restaraunts recommended during 5 weeks of travelling!) We were just so disappointed, and at E446 for the night, felt very ripped off. This was the most expensive hotel we stayed at, and we were happy to pay, but really expected better. One word of caution, do not attempt to drive into Avignon unless you are in a tiny car. It really is charming but the streets are so narrow and it causes heart failure at the damage you may do to a hire car as you scrape thru streets 5cm from your car sides! Definitely plan your trip so you use the train, far simpler
