“Good value, secure parking.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2010

We were looking for a good value hotel with secure parking in or close to Avignon and Du Lavarin seemed to tick the boxes. Located a five minute drive outside the town, it was easy to find, near the hospital, which is sign-posted from everywhere. Check-in was simple and fast, the bedroom and bathroom were small but perfectly adequate and clean. We intended to use the hotel simply for sleeping in and it was fine for that purpose. There was a kettle and plastic cups in the room. The TV channels were all French but we only watched it for the news and weather. There was a computer in the lobby, with internet access that was free for guests' use.

On the first day we arrived in the evening so we ate in the hotel. We sat outside on the terrace and had a nicely cooked meal with efficent and pleasant service at a price similar to what we would pay in the UK. We got a deal that included breakfast as we had read the reviews on here that said it was expensive and I can confirm that you would definitely not want to pay 13 euros for it.

As we had a car and wanted to see a lot of Provence we were out every day and didn't return to the hotel until after dinner. The hotel served its purpose and worked for us as a base and provided us with the free secure parking that the town centre hotels generally lacked.

“Pleasant stay close to a fascinating city.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2010

Spent a week at the Lavarin. Check-in quick, friendly and efficient. Public area of hotel recently refurbished. Rooms on small side and a little tired decor-wise but comfortable beds. Quiet. Free wifi. Tea/coffee making materials. TV. Small bathroom but good shower. Standard buffet breakfast but expensive at 13€/head. Interesting food at restaurant for dinner. But eccentric service - main course served 15 seconds (at most) after finishing first course. Hotel a 30 minute walk from Avignon and the sites. Bus stop outside hotel. Number 3 - a ten minute ride to town centre. Single ticket costs 1.20€. Pay the driver - having exact money helps. Buses run every 20 minutes but last one back to hotel is a very early 20.00hrs. So late night in Avignon means a taxi back to the hotel. Alternative is to eat in the hotel every evening becauwe there are no bars/restaurants nearby. Oh nearly forgot - hotel has a garden (where it is possible to eat breakfast/dinner) and a small pool. The latter not used.

“Wonderful ambience, owners/managers are the best!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2010

This hotel was our surprise during our European visit - I have to tell you that Patricia (co-owner/manager) and her husband, Simon really went out of their way to make myself and my 13 yr old daughter feel welcome. The pool and patio were beautiful and the rooms were adequate, sson to be renovated to my understanding. This is a place that really caters to their guests. A cheery "bon jour" always greeted us and we only had to ask for anything we needed. We were blessed to have met Patricia and Simon, as they really catered to my daughter and I, unexpectedly, helping us with transportation! The Continental breakfast was outstanding and prepared to cover all tastes. We dined by the pool one evenng and were amazed at the lovely meal. My only regret is that this place isn't closer to my home, or we would go more often- very much a getaway palce where I felt safe and cared for!

“Surprising little hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2010

I imagine this was a little local hotel with about 40 bedrooms, taken over by Best Western quite recently. The bedrooms are standard 1980s, but clean with decent air con. The ground floor has been beautifully refurbished in a slightly quirky modern style that is a real surprise. If the rooms could be re-done in the same way, then it will really be worthwhile going out of your way to find this hotel. Off road, very quiet with a mature garden, swimming pool and nice chairs on the lawn. There is a covered eating area opening out onto the garden; very pleasant for breakfast. Decent breakfast with a fine variety of bread and cakes, and squeeze-your-own orange juice. Good staff who didn't seem at all pressured. Quite a long way from the old town, so ideal only for people with cars (or bikes). Parking to visit the old town: around the old walls, spaces usually available in the evening. 3 hours on-road parking in the old town itself (make sure you have small change with you).

Excellent restaurants in the old town around the Place d'Horloge, though relatively few serving provencal food. We liked the Lou Marcau restaurant -- very good 3-course Table d'hote at 20 or 27 euros; wonderful cassoulet.

“Very pleasant and very clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2009

Before booking, we could not understand the reviews because the reviews varied from bad to excellent.
This hotel is on the ring road and just a few minutes from the TGV station in one direction or the Old City in the other direction. However, we had a rental car and so the location was quite painless.
The staff were wonderful. They offered maps and a drink while we waited the few minutes for our room to be ready. They offered directions to attractions and were very helpful and chatty (in English!).
Our room was just fine. Best Westerns are independently owned and have to endure inspections from BW on a regular basis. I have never had a significant complaint about a BW property and this hotel was no different. The room was comfortable and very clean.
We had dinner at the hotel because we wanted to decompress from the Avignon festival. Dinner was very pleasant out by the pool.
If you have a car, you should not hesitate to stay here.
