We booked the Avignon Grand Hotel as part of a deal with Eurostar. A couple of days before departure I was checking Avignon for restaurants and things to do and came across a number of fairly average and negative reviews of the hotel. It was too late to make any change to the trip, but I admit to being apprehensive about the hotel.
Well, all I can say is don't believe everything you read! Our room was superb - we paid an extra £10 a night to upgrade to a superior room and it would have been worth many times that. The Garden rooms are mini-suites with a large living area, big bedroom and two part bathroom with both bath and shower. Modern flat screen televisions are in both the living area and bedroom with a range of international channels on offer.
I read some criticism of the friendliness of the staff, but have found them fine - bearing in mind this is France, and perhaps American and English expectations of hotel staff are significantly different to those of the native French.
Breakfast, again, came in for criticism but once more was fine. A well laid out and plentiful buffet, with even an attempt at bacon and eggs for Anglophiles.
All in all I would not hesitate to recommend the Avignon Grand Hotel.
Oh yes. And the wi-fi works in all of the ground floor rooms. This review is being posted from our room where I have had good, free Internet for the whole line weekend.
