“The Finest 5* Hotel Outside of Paris”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

I've just returned from my December trip to Provence and thus I had not been at my Hotel 'Hotel D'Europe' since July. Can this hotel elevate itself anymore..is it possible? What has changed is that they have updated the rooms with a beautiful crisp white-lemon color and changed the fabrics on thier beautiful antique and beautiful furniture to go with this new color. The result is stunning! It reminds me of my room in the 'George Cinq' in Paris. I stayed in one of the 'Luxe' rooms and again...another room discovered that was superb. Entryway room with entrance to the most modern, marble and Tout-luxe bathroom that you could imagine. A bathtub made for two that looked so inviting with all the wonderful luxe toiletries. 40 inch flatscreen TV and of course..the detail ob the walls and ceiling of a building that dates back to the 14th-15thC. As usual, the bed lulls you to sleep and the beautiful antique writind desk with side chair is perfect to do work with 'Free Wifi'. The Hotel was truly decked out for Noel and it felt very merry and cheery with beatiful decorative tableaus ..tres francais! Try a glass of the Viognier in the bar before going to dinner. It is my favorite white in this region and the hotel has one of the best. I also recommend the Hotel Michelin star restaurant for at keast one night if you are staying for several days. The menu of the season was wonderful. I especially loved the Veloute of Legumes and Gambetta and the amazing Pork dish in a reduced sauce infused with Provencal herbs. The staff, of course, make or break any hotel. Fernando being at the helm with his infectious genuine personality that instills warmth, a truly happy manner where he will make anything that you need, possible and feeling cared for in his capable hands is what gives the Hotel that special something. The Staff: Ana, Marcela, Sergio, Sebastien, Aurelie and everyone else I didn't mention are just TOP. They are Hoteliers in the most profesional sense with a special provencal warmth. It is hard to get all in a review...the 19thC elevator that just drips with atmosphere...the stunning lobby and the amazing breakfast that I always take in my room as it is not just for sleeping and rushing out (like in most hotels)....these amazing rooms become part of the Provencal experience and what better way to start the day than with a superb, fresh breakfast (far less money than any other 5* hotel) in your beautiful room. Comme habitude, I always say it is my 'home away from home'.

Room Tip: If you decide to take a 'Chambre Luxe'...I love 112 the best. For a Superior....Chambre 101.

“Grim, Overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

Standard "classic" rooms" are grim and small. You would be very disappointed if you select this level of accommodation at Euro 190

At Euro 390 the room will be spacious with a very large bath area plus separate toilet room. However, way too much money for the dated and frumpy decor.

Would benefit from some towel hooks.

“Lovely Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

This is a lovely hotel. We had a huge room that had recently been updated. The restaurant is beautiful and the food is great. We had a light dinner in the bar one evening which was perfect. The staff here is so friendly and helpful. This hotel is in a perfect location. It is within walking distance of many things to do and very easy to find.

“Old world charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

We arrived at Avignon on a wet and gloomy Sunday evening in November, so it was all rather quiet in the hotel. We were met at the side entrance by the porter and our luggage was removed from our car, which was then garaged for us. The courtyard area leading to the reception would have been delightful on a hot summer evening. The hotel exudes an air of grandness which has probably seen little change in several decades. Our room was large and comfortable, and opened onto a terrace overlooking an inner courtyard. There is nothing that we could fault about our stay, except possibly the price, which seemed a little excessive for the time of year and might be the one reason to check out alternative accommodation if we were to stay in Avignon again.

Room Tip: We had room 111

“Wonderful Old World Hotel in the heart of Avignon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

person found this review helpful

We just spent 2 nights at Hotel d'Europe during the month of November. The hotel was spectacular - old world building with a grand lobby, beautiful gated courtyard with a 300 year old tree and lovely staff that treated their guests with the utmost courtesy and class. We stayed in room 123 which was a very large room with 3 windows overlooking the street and courtyard. The bathroom was enormous with a large shower and separate WC. We typically only stay in 5 star hotels and were amazed that this hotel has only a 4 star rating. We would rate it amongst the best hotels in France including the Majestic Hotel in Cannes and Negresco in Nice. The location was stellar - within walking distance to everything.

Room Tip: Room 123 has its own entrance off the courtyard.
