I just spent a weekend at the Hotel Magnan and wanted to update some of the information in previous posts. Despite what the signs say, they now have a 24-hour front desk, so you no longer need to remember the room code.
Also, they're finishing up renovations that (according to the front desk) affected all the rooms. I know my room had a new sink, new shower, new tilework, new toilet, new carpet, and new bed, so while small, it was a very pleasant surprise for all the stuff to be so new. Now, the drawback is that the room had that "new carpet" smell that had to be aired out, but honestly, given all the things a carpet in a hotel can smell like, I really can't complain about newness being the smell.
I dealt with three different people at the front desk over the course of my stay, and all were very friendly. The location is good. It's about 200m or so from the bus station, which is right next to the SNCF train station, and about 15 minutes to walk to the tourist part of town. The block it's on isn't particularly interesting and a little empty when it gets late, but if you're concerned about safety, you can always walk around the outside of the city walls, which is on a busy street. And the hotel is directly inside one of the entries through the city walls.
As for negatives, I can't speak for all the rooms, but I know the room I was in was very small. There was just enough room to walk by my bed and into the bathroom. For someone like me, traveling light, it was fine. But as there was a double bed, it could be used for 2 people, and if 2 people each had a suitcase, it would be pretty tough. I'm sure there are bigger rooms there, but just be aware you may get a tiny one. I noticed another person on this site complained about the groups. While I didn't have any problems myself, I did notice there was a large group there. I guess I just got lucky and got a well-behaved one.
I would stay there again though if I'm in town. The location and cleanliness are good, and the wifi is convenient.
