“I enjoyed my stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2010

From the outside this hotel is nothing to look at but inside it is lovely, and the staff are helpful and friendly. While the room is basic, it is clean and of a reasonable size, as is the bathroom. There is no lift, but the stairs are not too difficult to climb. The room has a ceiling fan, which provided adequate cooling in September, when the days were not hot. From my room I had a view over a plant filled rear central courtyard, which was just beautiful. The breakfast was good value and had a good selection. The hotel is close walking distance to restaurants and not far from the main sights. I would recommend this hotel as a good place to stay within the ancient city walls of Avignon for a very good price.

“Friendly and pleasant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2009

A good budget alternative to the more glamorous large hotels. Rooms were clean and of good size and with some character. En suites are dated and small. Breakfast is basic but adequate and was included in the price (this had not been expected). Helpful staff.

“Rooms recently renovated; pleasant but small”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 May 2009

I just spent a weekend at the Hotel Magnan and wanted to update some of the information in previous posts. Despite what the signs say, they now have a 24-hour front desk, so you no longer need to remember the room code.

Also, they're finishing up renovations that (according to the front desk) affected all the rooms. I know my room had a new sink, new shower, new tilework, new toilet, new carpet, and new bed, so while small, it was a very pleasant surprise for all the stuff to be so new. Now, the drawback is that the room had that "new carpet" smell that had to be aired out, but honestly, given all the things a carpet in a hotel can smell like, I really can't complain about newness being the smell.

I dealt with three different people at the front desk over the course of my stay, and all were very friendly. The location is good. It's about 200m or so from the bus station, which is right next to the SNCF train station, and about 15 minutes to walk to the tourist part of town. The block it's on isn't particularly interesting and a little empty when it gets late, but if you're concerned about safety, you can always walk around the outside of the city walls, which is on a busy street. And the hotel is directly inside one of the entries through the city walls.

As for negatives, I can't speak for all the rooms, but I know the room I was in was very small. There was just enough room to walk by my bed and into the bathroom. For someone like me, traveling light, it was fine. But as there was a double bed, it could be used for 2 people, and if 2 people each had a suitcase, it would be pretty tough. I'm sure there are bigger rooms there, but just be aware you may get a tiny one. I noticed another person on this site complained about the groups. While I didn't have any problems myself, I did notice there was a large group there. I guess I just got lucky and got a well-behaved one.

I would stay there again though if I'm in town. The location and cleanliness are good, and the wifi is convenient.

“Pleasant Friendly Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2008

Quite a good two star hotel. Room was €80 for two of us and breakfast another 8 per person. Good choice of stuff for breakfast. Room clean and pleasantly furnished overlooking a leafy inner courtyard. Staff very friendly and helpful. No hotel parking. Free parking nearby but it can be hard to get a space, even in September.

  • Liked — Friendly, Clean, Good Location.
  • Disliked — Nothing bad.

“- not for us either”

(First off, there are two hotels in Avignon with similar names...the other it Mignon, Make sure you get the right hotel. This hotel is supposed to be the "nicer" of them.)

Anyway, at Le Magnan we were disapointed and actually left early for another hotel.

pros:
- Good location, just inside the wall of the old city.
- Secure. They have an electronic lock for the main door after the front desk closes.

con:
- Very small towels in bathroom. No hand towels, just a small bath and wachcloth. They were think and had stains.
- My mother heard mice at night.
- No safe in room.
- Thin doors to room and bathroom
- Breakfast nothing like the picture on their website

My parents stayed there a few years earlier and liked it. On that stay, they had a room facing the courtyard, which was closed because if the cold weather during this visit. They also said services in the room then were of better quality. It may be fine of others, but not for us.
