“Tres Romantique!”

We'd just flown in from San Francisco, endured a second flight from CDG to Nice and a few hours drive on jet lag to get to Aix en Provence. All was washed away in the wonder we felt when the Chateau de Meyrargues came into view. An idyllic first place to stay after a long trip, the hotel sits high above the village. One truly feels like nobility in antiquity at this place. What appears to be sacred artifacts dating from the time of the chateau decorate the interior and it resembles more a museum than a place to chuck your bags for a couple nights. Although it was a few minutes drive to our ultimate destination, Aix, the location turned out to be superb. It offered the charm and peace of the countryside, a satisfying retreat from a busy day visiting Aix. Dr. Maurice Binet, the proprietor, was extremely helpful and courteous.

“A great find”

My wife and I stayed in this impressive Chateau out of season and were the only guests, normally not the best feeling for a stay.

Our room was luxurious, spacious and reasonably priced for this class of accommodation with a view of the old village below.

At dinner we enjoyed a wonderful meal served by two formally attired waiters who made us feel we were royalty.

“a unique and mostly positive experience”

We wanted to stay in a French Chateau, and were very satisfied with our 3 1/2 days at the Chateau. Difficult to find, although only 15 minutes from Aix, but worth the effort. After all, how often do you stay at a 10th century castle on a hill? the Staff is small, but friendly. The owner Maurice Benet (unsure of spelling) helped me with luggage, although there is no formal bellman. Important: they do have two elevators, but you won't find them on your own). All the rooms are worth exploring, and the views are great. The owner allowed us to use the internet for no charge, and breakfast (included) was adequate. We did not have dinner there, opting to dine in Aix every night. Pretty good Provence location, but I would have moved after 2 nights. Probably the most memorable place we stayed in during our 10 days in France.

  • Liked — the experience of staying in such a unique place
  • Disliked — Difficult to find
  • Tips/Secrets — if you'd like something other than a generic hotel in toen, try a castle.

“Beautiful, But Be Aware”

I am torn as to reviewing this property. The chateau is beautiful and has amazing vistas of the surrounding hills and valley below. Our suites were huge and very well decorated, and I recommend splurging for the extra space. The bathtubs and showers need major revamping. The pool is lovely, but it is a hike from the chateau. Service here is hit and miss. There are no bellmen to help with luggage, and there are 30+ steps to the front door. However, the front desk and dining room staff are very cordial and did their best to help (not many bi-lingual staff). Overall, we enjoyed staying here (15-minute drive to Aix-en-Provence), but this is not a place for everyone. If you are looking to stay somewhere unique and can ignore some misgivings, then you will enjoy your time here.

“Avoid; various problems, poor mgmt.”

Beautiful hotel and grounds, horrible operations. Yellow-Brown water from bathroom sink, air conditioning worked erratically, bright lights shining in windows at night, can be noisy - some rooms right above outside dining area and hotel fails to disclose. Pool far distance from hotel, difficult for children, older adults or disabled. Managment rude, inhospitable and only interested if lots of $$$ spent.
