“Really nice setting”

Stayed here for one week at the start of August. We had one of the smaller upstairs rooms which was basic but comfortable. Quite hot at this time of year but a large fan was provided and you don't stay in your room much anyway on holiday do you. The room included a microwave, fridge and two electric burners for heating food up from the local superb supermarket. Great restaurant in the grounds and excellent base for travelling all over the south of France. The grounds are beautiful and there is a nice riverside walk nearby for those lazy days.

“High on Character, but low on service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2007

Stayed for 10 days this month. One of the larger rooms-- loft with double bed plus two fold out beds downstairs. Breakfast is meager. A selection of not so freshed baked goods, strong coffee. They want to know at the front desk the night before if you will partake. NOT worth it after you get to the nearby Casino and pick up some groceries. Kitchenette fairly well equipped. No housekeeping. You have to beg them for a trash bag after you take out your own trash. One young guy at the front desk is customer focused, but the others are quite rude. No AC as you might expect, but with the loft upstairs it is VERY hot and stuffy. After begging they gave us a noisy old table top fan. We bought a second at the Monoprix as you really needed two to cool off the place. Fold out beds on first floor very uncomfortable with very thin mattresses, you can feel every bar through them.

If the mattresses were decent and if the staff were more responsive this would be a cool place as it was originally built in the 1500's and at one time housed patients, or those quarantined during the plague. Plus, most units have extended living space with outdoor, very pleasant, garden terrace type patios.

It is next to new Sports Complex which houses a restaurant on an outdoor terrace which is not bad when you don't feel like cooking or going into Aix. Very convenient to highway if you are visiting other areas in the region. A 10 minute drive in traffic to the old town. There is a bus nearby, but we did not figure that out til the end of our stay. You really need a car, as this is on the outskirts of town.

  • Liked — Picturesque, great patio.
  • Disliked — Service was rude, fold out beds uncomfortable, no microwave oven.

“Correct, but nothing more”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2006

Stayed there for one night in July, booked a duplex room for 3 people. The doublebed on the mezzanine was comfortable, but there is no airconditioning and as the bed is higher up than the window, all hot air is concentrated on top and cannot escape. Tropical temperature of roughly 35°C made it virtually impossible to sleep on the top floor. No ventilator was provided to compensate for the missing air-conditioning.
The bedsofa on the ground floor was comfortable, but the room service had forgotten to clean underneath it, so we found many hairs and dust which must have been there for a long time.
Walking into town center is impossible, you need to take the bus no. 6 (cost 1.10 euro per person) or drive into town center (10 minute drive). Bus stop is located 50 meters away from hotel, but attention, bus service back to the hotel stops at 10pm, so you will have to get a taxi to take you back to the Bastide.
Probably would not go back to this hotel, definititely not in summer.

“Not quite what I was expecting”

I think for the pice I was expecting something a little more modern. It was clean and the views from the windows nice, but it felt a little run down. The kitchen was small and pokey and the toilet was right next to it. It was too far from town to walk and had to rely on the bus which ran semi-regularly. The staff were friendly as much as they could be with the language differences. Simple, basic facilities.

“The way to enjoy Provence”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2004

Almost wound up at the Ibis after a hot and long day of driving. Accidently found this place as we missed the drive for the Ibis. The Bastide is a restaured country home of former French King Rene (14 century). They have turned it into a hotel with studio and mezzanine appts. The grounds are large and peaceful, staff wonderful. We stayed 3 nights in a fully equiped studio which meant we could get food from the market or nearby Casino supermarket and cook dinners. It's a great home base to visit around..Avignon, Cassis, Arles, Marseilles, Les Baux. The Bus # 6 is 50 meters away so, don't need to drive into Aix and takes only a few minutes to go. We paid 68 euros (low season) or 75 (high). For more info: ------------ Would stay a week there to visit Provence!
