“Mixed feelings”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2011

I stayed in this hotel at the end of April and left with mixed feelings about the experience. The hotel has good and bad points.

To start with the good points: I found the men who worked in reception polite, helpful and friendly. The reception was manned 24 hours a day, which made me feel safe at night. The location is excellent - a 2 minutes walk from the Cours Mirabeau via the lovely Place Des Quatre Dauphins, which was especially beautiful when I visited as the horse chestnut trees were flowering. Relaxed approach to what time I left the hotel each day and gave access for cleaning of my room. I paid a reasonable price - presumably because I had been able to book some months in advance.

Bad points: My room was small and fairly basic but it was a reasonable price. However, the bathroom really was too small for comfort. I had to manoeuvre around the basin to get in and out of the extremely small and cramped shower. The shower leaked on to the bathroom floor, which meant that I could not relax, as I was constantly trying to direct the water away from the shower door. I mopped the water up each day and left a completely soaked towel on the floor, so at the very least, the cleaner must have realised that there was a problem. I eventually worked out that the seal on the bottom of one side of the shower door was broken. My room and bathroom were not dirty but they were not spotless either.

My room was very warm but I couldn't get the air conditioning to work. When I asked at reception, I was told that it was off for the whole hotel because it was not considered hot enough yet to justify switching it on. Consequently, I had to sleep with the windows open but my room was on the first floor overlooking the street. One night, I had to close the windows as I was being woken so often by people shouting in the street as they passed below my window. As I had particularly selected to stay in hotels with air conditioning, I was not impressed that it was switched off. I think if hotels have a policy of not switching the air conditioning on until they consider it to be hot enough to warrant its use - this should be made very clear on their websites etc. I could be wrong but when I researched and booked this hotel, I saw no mention that the air conditioning is only in operation at certain times of the year.

Would I say there again? No - not if I can find a reasonably priced hotel in a similarly good location. I have serious reservations about recommending this hotel to others for the reasons above.

“Provence meets Fawlty Towers!”

Having been lured by the seductive review in the Lonely Planet guide, evoking monasterial charm and simple gallic repose, it became glaringly apparent upon arrival that this was simply not the case. A frosty, bordering on rude, receptionist began to argue with us that the room we had booked the night before (in french) was actually not what we thought and that our french was clearly at fault. He then offered us the only other room available - the most expensive in the hotel - at a very generous discount of 10 euros! It cost 230 Euros for a poorly decorated, hideous vision from the 1970's. This was not helped by sub-standard amenities (shower) and a ambient room temperature of 27 degrees C. This was in the sweltering month of April...When approached to turn the aircon on, he chivalrously informed that the aircon was not to be turned on til mid-May, and that should we want a cooler room, we should open the windows...In summary, this is a grossly over-priced, tired hotel from the 1970s. Bad service, bad decor and bad staff. To be avoided at all costs. Ignore the Lonely Planet (normally great) on this occasion.

“A disgusting scam.”

Booked in for a week. Room was questionable but location good so unpacked. Air Conditioning then leaked all over the floor. We complained to be told they had known of the problem for several days but thought the manager had fixed it. They had no other room and could not fix the problem for at least two days. We had to leave and find another hotel believing it to be a serious hazard. Visa then informed us the hotel had charged us for 6 nights as a cancellation. Numerous attempts to speak to the manager failed being told multiple excuses, from ' out of town ' to ' on holiday ' We did not cancel, they had failed to provide us with habitable accommodation. Aviod this place.

“beautiful”

A gorgeous old residence well maintained, with a spectacular modern bathroom as part of a beautiful, big and high-ceiling 19th century room. Lovely period textiles and clever one-way glass on our ground-floor room so people walking by couldn't see in. Great location. Breakfast in a lovely lounge but not really worth it since it's the standard croissant, baguette, coffee, jam and there are plenty of cafes and brasseries nearby. Staff quick to find us a TV remote control and fix the loose lock on the door.

“Great hotel, great value, great location”

Helpful reception; basic single but fresh furnishings; the bed needs a new mattress but it wasn't a deal breaker. The room had a clean bathroom that is compact but all you need. Breakfast was good. It's in a great location - only a 20 min walk from the bus, 5 min from Cour Mirabeau and ten minutes easy walk to the railway. I t was good to come back to at the end of the day.
