Our plan had been to take our two youngest children on a trip to Normandy and treat our parents in law at the same time, who were celebrating a special wedding anniversary. From the pictures on the net this spa hotel looked ideal. Having driven through some spectacular countryside and seen some very inviting small hotels and gîtes on the way there, our initial impression of the building was one of disappointment. It could have been a half decent hospital or prison institution, but certainly looked nothing like the luxury spa we had imagined.
Our family room was completely without character, and there was nothing at all "cosy" about the "cosy" double room (their description, not mine) that we had booked for our in-laws. We had hoped it would be at least a little romantic, but could not have been more wrong. We had in fact stayed in an Etap hotel the night before on arriving in Paris, and that was infinitely better value for money.
The cot we had asked for was broken, the room was cold at night and then on our second night the water supply stopped altogether. When my husband asked for a reduction on the price of the room he was not offered a discount on the basis that it was the fault of the town, not the hotel itself. Breakfast was not included, and far from cheap at 11 euros per person, especially bearing in mind it was nothing more than a continental breakfast of croissants, bread and yoghurts. (No hot food at all) In addition the location is on a busy intersection and opposite an Aldi supermarket far from the centre of Honfleur...completely lacking of any of the Normandy charm which is evident on almost every corner in the region.
We have had the fortune to stay in many hotels across Europe over the years, and I have to say that this hotel demonstrated one of the worst price to quality ratios I have ever come across. It was hugely overpriced for what it was, not in the slightest bit child friendly or romantic and to be honest the building itself was downright ugly. Both Normandy and Honfleur are to be wholeheartedly recommended, but make sure you do not ruin your trip to this region by staying in this third rate establishment. It was an absolute waste of money (and the last time I ever book a hotel before reading the comments on trip advisor first.)
