“An Unforgettable Experience!”

During our visit to France we got the opportunity to stay in a truly unforgettable chateau in Cherbourg. I was a little skeptical based on the previous reviewers comments, however, was pleasantly surprised by the accommodations. As a seasoned traveler, I'm aware of what to expect in a bed and breakfast environment. When we checked in we were given a key to the chateau and a brief orientation of the layout. The Chateau is situated in a large park that has 5 or 6 different walking trails through beautiful gardens and wooded areas. The original village homes that surround the chateau beautifully compliment the property. During your stay you can see the many animals located on the property. There are no shortage of horses, lama, pigmy goats and swans to name a few. When we returned in the evening we were able to let ourselves in and enjoyed wine and cheese in the parlor before retiring for the evening. In the morning, a traditional French breakfast awaited complete with the BEST coffee and croissants you could ask for. We stayed a total of 3 nights while visiting the many port villages in the region during the day. Oh, did I mention the chateau is home to an honest to goodness Count as well? If you require someone to hold your hand during the evening, this may not be the place for you, but if you like bed and breakfasts this is definitely one to visit!

“Chateau from hell”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2008

Booked this hotel because it looked beautiful on the web site of chateauselect.com and it was a birthday treat for myself. On arrival at lunchtime on 25th June we found the place absolutely deserted. After searching the grounds we eventually found someone who did work there. She gave us our bedroom key and also the front door key. The bedroom was tacky, cluttered, dangerous and extremely dusty. It looked it hadn't had a good clean for years. We unpacked and then went out for the rest of the day. On our return around 9 pm the place was still deserted and there were no lights anywhere. One thing I can't fault was the breakfast the following morning. We went out for the day and returned at midnight to find complete darkness, no-one around and it was really spooky. On top of this our bedroom hadn't been cleaned - bed not made etc. The dirty towels were still as we had left them. We had no choice but to make the best of it.

We'd had enough by this time as it wasn't a holiday but was turning out to be an endurance test. Decided to leave in the morning, after 2 nights, even though we had booked for 4 nights.

Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone as it is isolated, dangerous and definitely creepy.
