“better than we expected”

like the previous review we were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. having booked a 4 night leger package here and read the reviews we actually booked another caen hotel for the latter 3 nights with every intention of only using the carline as a meeting point for the leger tour. however, after our first night we decided to cancel our back-up and stay at the carline. i agree with everything PJW1949 says so won't bother repeating - except our shower was not mouldy. we were particularly pleased with a very quiet room - couldn't hear any noise whatsoever (other than a noisy cistern which we were able to turn off at night) - we were in room 10 on the ground floor. only 2 mins from the excellent tram service into the centre
for a reasonably cheap 2* the carline is fine.

Room Tip: ground floor 1-10 - a separate quiet corridor with only 6 rooms so less night traffic

“Great Value”

After reading previous reviews I was not looking forward to staying here. I was very relieved to be pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was attractive and very clean with lovely friendly staff. Firstly the breakfast was excellent with a wide choice, which included thick cut ham, eggs, cheese, wonderful bread rolls, 2 choices of cereal, yoghurt, fresh fruit, toast, pastries, jams, honey and best of all really decent coffee! There was also tea, bottled water and 2 kinds of fruit juice. Dinner (I pre- booked) was also great value with several choices of main course with a vegetable and bread rolls. The starter was a help yourself buffet with a very good choice. The dessert buffet was a tasty selection which included tarts, fresh fruit, cake, delicious mousse and more. There was no restriction on the number of dessert one could eat! The house wine was very drinkable and reasonably priced. A la carte also available at fair prices.
The room I had was on the ground floor and was basic but very clean and quiet. The bed was very firm and a few more hangers would have been useful as there are no drawers. The bathroom was quite small but clean. However, the shower did have quite a lot of black mould which should have been cleaned. The grouting was discoloured. Both of these defects which give a bad impression can and should be rectified with a bleach solution and scrubbing brush. The shower tray was clean as was the rather tired looking shower curtain. The shower was powerful and soap was provided as were good towels which were changed daily. The bar/reception area was pleasant and comfortable. Over- all an excellent value hotel with helpful and cheerful staff, well located a few minutes from the tram to the centre of town. The Carline is an ideal place for a coach touring holiday as the room is only used for sleeping. You get what you pay for and this was great value all round. I was on a Leger Tour which I very much enjoyed.

Room Tip: Take a few extra hangers

“Really???”

I recently stayed at this Hotel while on a D Day tour with Leger Holidays, the only good thing about this hotel is the shower is powerful and the rooms were clean.
The bad things are : In a bad location which looks like an idustrial estate and with no choice of where to eat only at hotel or next door in buffalo bills.

The main barman/manager was very rude and often ignored you if you wanted a drink at the bar and when I did get one I got over charged compared to when served by other staff, 25 Euro for 2 Jack Daniels and coke!!!!!!!!! He seemed to understand english when I asked for a vegetarian option in the resturant to which he said omlette so I ordered a cheese omlette but found ham in it making in un edible to me, when I tried to explain the problem all of a sudden he didnt understand english!!
He also put the phone down on my friend while trying to ask for advice on how to ring the UK

The breakfast is a typical continental breakfast but there was only 1 toaster to make toast and the water bath for cooking boiled eggs in never cooked any, loads of waste of raw eggs left on plates on the table.

The rooms have no drawers or wardrobe to put your clothes in, very hard small beds, no hair dryer, only 2 small towels for a twin room, luckily i took my own.

You would think that as this hotel is a regular one that ledger use on their tours it would be updated and better staffed.

“Never again”

Stayed here on a Ledger Battlefield tour of Normandy D day beaches. Is in the middle of nowhere on a type of modern industrial estate. The bar is expensive, unattractive and if the barman is booking someone in,then you just have to wait for a drink.24 hour bar service which is just as well.
The restaurant is no better and you take what they have left or go without. They try to be nouveau cuisine but is just an excuse to serve small portions with chips or chips or chips. There is a 2 slice toaster for all to share where the bread gets stuck, but if you turn it upside down and shake it then the undercooked toast will fall out eventually.
A friend asked for a plain omlette but was told she could only have cheese or ham.
Also unable to ring home to UK from room .The beds are hard and small but the shower is good. And do not use the toilet if the radiator is on-you will burn your legs

Room Tip: Another hotel.

“Basic facilities but a good base”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

We stayed at this hotel for three nights as part of a battlefield tour and when we arrived here I was filled with dread. The outside is very drab and not very welcoming. The rooms are very basic, there is no wardrobe or draws a small kettle is provided with two tea bags and two small milks, there was no hair dryer iron or products provided. The rooms are small and so are the bathrooms. You also only get two towels provided so if staying here take your own. Ear plugs would also be a good investment as the walls are quite thin and you can hear your neighbours moving about etc. Having said all the negatives, the staff were very friendly and the food was ok. It made a good base for our tour and we didnt spend a huge amount of time in our rooms. If asked would I stay here again? probably not but I suppose you get what you pay for.
