We spent 5 nights at the Hotel de France in Caen with the the purpose of the visit to experience the D Day landing beaches and a visit to the Bayeaux Tapestry. The Hotel was ideal for our needs, close to the station and a short walk into the centre of Caen with good value eating places within easy reach. The room was comfortable ( comfort room) with good bathroom & plenty of fresh towels. The staff were friendly and helpful. We did not have breakfast but just went along the road (towards the station) to a very nice cafe.I would use Caen as a base to visit other areas in Normandy.Bayeaux was 20 mins on the train. The tapestry is a 'must see'.The other highlight was a visit to the Memorial de Caen Museum followed by an excellant tour of the beaches ( booked at the Tourist Information office)
