This was the best price we could find close to Lille centre and it promised parking (which we ended up not having to use as we found street parking). The hotel itself was more like an apartment complex, with several buildings.
We were concerned by some reviews about lack of hot water or disreputable neighbourhood, but we didn't have problems with either. The location was convenient for the Citadel, but not as close to the Grand Place as I would have liked. It was pretty much a 20-30 minute walk. I didn't think the location was bad--it is across the street from a school and it was fine during the day. At night we felt safe enough, but it was very empty and there were very few businesses open at night there (except a late night grocery and pizza delivery) so someone on their own could be nervous, although nothing ever happened to us. (We only ever got asked for money when we were in the centre of Lille, not near the hotel.)
Our room was fine and clean and the single and double rooms appeared identical except for the price. Our bed was unusually long--I don't know what size it was but it was longer than standard double in length, although not in width. The bed was very cozy and soft and seemed to be made entirely of foam, but it made for very poor sleep, maybe because it was too soft for us.
Minus: The bathroom. It was very cramped and the fan didn't seem to do anything to remove the steam. The square shower tray had a curtain for two of the sides, but it was fairly small and didn't take much to knock the curtain so that the water sprayed on the floor and bathmat. The curtain itself did not appear to be cleaned, as the lower third of it had that pinkish/orange mildew tint, and as the shower space was so small, it was difficult not to come into contact with the curtain. The shower didn't have anything at all that could be used as a shelf for shampoo or soap, and balacing it on the taps didn't work very well. Additionally the wall-mounted showerhead holder in ours was broken so you had to hold the showerhead the entire time. However, the water was plenty hot.
Pluses: The breakfast. It was very good (unusually so--the French stick bread was amazing, the yoghurts were excellent, the pains au chocolat even though tiny were delicious, etc etc). Although it must all be bought in bulk, they didn't skimp on quality and we ate our fill every day.
We had a tiny kitchenette, which was adequate for a holiday stay, with sink, stove, microwave, and some basic cookware and dishes etc.
One of the guys on night reception was friendly and utterly charming and always tried his best to help.
