“Fantastic value with great service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

We travelled to Lille with the intention to stay over for 2 nights, we were 2 couples and did not have anything booked. We parked in the Grand Place underground car park and had a walk around looking for where to stay.

Typically the hotels were around the €90+ price range for a double room and breakfast is chargeable at around €6 - €10 per person per day.

We came across the Hotel Flandre Angleterre, situated across the road from the main station, the small entrance was between a couple of street cafes (which was quite nice as you had the facility on hand to eat and drink and watch the world go by). The hotel is just a 5 minute strol from the Grand Place and main square and lots of shops.

The reception was small but clean and tidy, the receptionist was friendly and spoke English if it helped, but she certainly appreciated the fact we attempted to speak French. In fact the 3 staff and Breakfast waitress were all friendly and helpful.

We had 2 double rooms at the front of the hotel, the rooms were clean and tidy. The rooms are not huge in fact you could say small, they are a little dated but the most important thing for us was cleanliness and a comfy clean bed. Which is what we got. One of the two rooms had a bath with shower hose (not connected to the wall), the other had a nice enclosed shower both with plenty of hot water with good pressure.

The rooms had a flatscreen remote TV, telephone, minibar and hairdryer.

The breakfast was plentiful with cereal, boiled eggs, various breads, Croissants, fruit, yogurts, cheese, meat, jams, fruit juice, tea, coffee...... we certainly did not go hungry.

The only downside to our stay was the fact that the rooms at the front of the hotel are a bit noisy, they are double glazed but the rooms are not exactly quiet.... no noise from other rooms but there was noise from passing people and some traffic noise. We could have had a room at the rear of the hotel but wanted to have a nice view and to watch the world go by (my room had a small balcony that overlooked the station).

I would stay at this hotel again without doubt and at €75 for a double room inclusive of breakfast you would struggle to find anywhere at such good value.

“very small room/ helpful staff”

We booked the basic room for 2 nights - v. small, 80s decor. The room was set up for one person - i.e. 1 plastic cup, 1 towel, and that
is what it should be - a single room. If you are going to this hotel - upgrade. I was bitten on the leg and body during my stay and, whatever it was stayed with me for the next 5 days!! The reception staff were very helpful and pleasant.

“Cheap but passable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

Close to both stations, this hotel is cheap and handy. The rooms are fired in all over the place (Normal?) and we learnt the fire escape because our room was on the roof with four door and stair changes. With a roof window, and French notices, we were eaten alive by mosquitoes the first night ( found the bug zapper in room next morn) and sweltered the next night ( found fan next morn). We slept well the 3rd night.

“Family rooms but they are not for everyone ....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

We rented the "family rooms" and they are pretty basic ... they might suit some people but we were disappointed. They are essentially 2 hotel rooms built into the attic .... and accessed via a rabbit warren of halls and stairs. There's no adjoining door between the 2 rooms .... so you have to go out on to a small landing ... and need a key to lock the rooms. This wouldn't be a good solution if you are travelling with young kids as they have to lock themselves in. Our big gripes however were that they only have a raked ceiling window ...... so there's no view at all (these rooms do face into the courtyard anyway) ... and the rooms are very hot because they take the afternoon sun ..... and you need to close the window all night to keep out the swarms of mosquitos (enough for the hotel to provide a zapper in every room). So we found it pretty stifling. The rooms are simple and probably get to 2 stars because there is a safe and a hairdryer ..... but they do qualify as a reasonable, basic room in a good location if you can get it at the right price or just need a bed for a few people. Cleaning was pretty patchy. Beds were very hard however at least the sheets were clean and towels and room refreshed each day. Some lights didn't work. The ceiling above the beds are very low (it is the attic so watch your head) but the staff were friendly which provided some relief. Location is across the road from the train station and just down the road from the main square and shopping areas so that's a plus. Best supermarket is across the road to the righ of the train station. Lots of cafes etc nearby. Anyway, it might suit a budget traveller or an overnight stay .... but you might struggle if you stay 3 days like we did.

“DISGUSTING”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2009

I would not recomend this hotel to my worst enemy,Filthy soiled and stained obviously un-changed bed linen. Dangerous winding stair cases with un safe banisters and a sheer open drop to the left not safe for children or those un-steady on the feet.
The room was in need of a deep clean and had roof vents only so extremley hot and un ventilated. the fire escape route was questionable to the point i could not sleep for worring especially being at roof level.Had i of booked any longer than one noght i would have demanded a refund and sought alternative accomadation, not possible for the one night as every where previously booked. The room had a fridge and hob but not a piece of equipment not a kettle saucepan plate or cup NOTHING ! very strange obviously they were concerned that they may have to clean it !! And the worst was the fact the lighting in the room was smouldered flood lights !! yes what we would use in the garden and very high wattage.
My advice to you is if you have found a room that looks questionable book it over this one dont be fooled by the pictures or description DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
