I'm glad I hadn't read other Tripadvisor reviews before booking (and I did wonder whether to bother reviewing it myself: after all, it's a Holiday Inn Express so you know exactly what to expect). But I decided it was unfair not to - unfair to the hotel and to fellow travellers. The pluses: it's inexpensive, the rooms although small have everything you want, including a couple of English cable channels, the shower is good, less cramped bathroom than some I've seen, the wi-fi is free, so is the pretty good breakfast (hardboiled eggs, ham, cheese, bread, croissants, pain au chocolat, 2 kinds of juice, coffee and tea, cereal, jam, honey, mieral water...), and the parking is secure (underground, coded access, I suspect CCTV though didn't look). On the downside, the parking is very tight to get out of in a big car (we have a Volvo V70 estate) and if you don't have a passenger you're going to have to shuffle across to push the exit buttons) - but it's perfectly doable provided you take your time and don't panic! The location is excellent (yes there are beggars but this is France) and you are close to the metro (one stop to Rihour for the historic old centre, 70 cents) if you don't want a ten minute walk. And very close to Place Sebastopol, restaurants and very good Saturday market, and to the Musee des Beaux Arts. Turn left out of the hotel into Rue Leon Gambetta (street it is on) and walk 500 metres and you've got the larger Sunday market. For 77 Euros a night, free breakfast (23 Euros each at another hotel we looked at), free wi-fi (15 Euros ditto), and safe parking at another 12, I couldn't find much to complain about. The English speaking staff were friendly and helpful in advising on where to go etc.
