“Excellent location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Stayed here for 2 nights over New Year. The room was very spacious with plenty of storage space, as previous reviewers have mentioned some of the furniture is a bit ecletic and doesn't fit in with the style of the hotel. The only bad thing that I would say is that on arrival our non smoking room smelt quite strongly of smoke, however after leaving the windows open for a while that soon disappeared.

The hotel is really well located, a couple of minutes to lots of shops and restaurants one way, if you go the other way you're in Vieux Lille in the same amount of time. We didn't use public transport at all, the walk from Lille Europe took about 15 mins so no need for taxis either.

The staff are friendly and helpful, they allowed us to store our bags as our room wasn't ready when we arrived. I can't comment on breakfast as we didn't have it but got croissants from Carrefour in Euralille instead!

“Fine, but nothing special”

This is a perfectly fine hotel. Rooms are clean, and the reception staff polite. The hotel is near the Old Town, and everything we wanted was in walking distance. We booked a superior room through booking.com, and got a good deal, though we feel that the hotel's advertised price for these rooms does not represent good value for money. The room was very spacious, with a balcony (although no views to speak of), with a good shower, dressing gowns and toiletries. However it didn't have the luxury edge that you might expect from the hotel's own descriptions of these rooms.

Rooms have tea/coffee facilities, which we don't usually value. However, as the hotel's breakfast was expensive (E13), we found the coffee a useful stop gap until we could get to one of the many local cafes for a croissant.

The room has a separate toilet, which is a bit strange, as you have to go round to the bathroom to wash your hands.

We found the hotel quiet, but if you went to bed early you might not agree, as the walls were quite thin. The area surrounding the hotel is perfectly fine, but can get a bit a noisy with passing party crowds in the early hours, making sleeping with the the window open difficult for some. (We suspect this would be worse in the summer.) The hotel bar was noisy at street level, but as we were on a higher floor, we didn't hear it from the room.

We might well stay here when we come back to Lille (as we will - it's a lovely town). However, we wouldn't plan our trip around being able to stay here, and suspect there are probably several hotels at the same price offering an equally good experience.

“Nice hotel, shame about the smell!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

This hotel was booked as part of a surprise weekend for my birthday and we returned yesterday.

My partner had read the reviews on Tripadvisor and, having experienced the hotel, we agree with them.

When you enter the hotel there is a grubby red carpet on the four steps leading up to the main doors and when the doors open you are hit by the wonderful smell of French drains! However, you come to accept that the reception area has this awful smell but rest assured the rest of the hotel smells fine and doesn't suffer from it at all.

The hotel is well located and we paid the extra for a room with a view of Le Grand Place which was worth it. It was lovely to stand with the windows open and watch the activity in the square, especially at night when it was lit up too.

The rooms are extremely comfortable, very clean and quiet. The en-suite was large and clean with a few complimentary toiletries such as soap and shower gel. The staff were very helpful and certainly wanted to make sure they made your stay as comfortable as possible.

The breakfast, although extra, was really nice as well. There was a good selection and in typical French style you didn't feel rushed so could sit and enjoy your breakfast in a leisurely manner.

The two things that stand out are the strange juke box in the lounge area and the clear plastic chairs in the rooms which do not blend in with the theme of the hotel at all, but create a harmless "what the..." question when you see them for the first time.

By the way the City tour is certainly worth it and we really enjoyed learning so much about Lille and it's history.

Overall, we would say you should certainly give this hotel a try.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a room with a view of Le Grand Place.

“Perfect Base for Exploring Lille”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

We found this a great hotel for getting out and exploring Lille. It was within easy walking distance of the Eurostar & most of the town (we didn't use the metro at all).

Our room faced the main square which was nice (although we did feel a little bit overlooked by the Ferris Wheel which was set up as part of the winter Christmas markets but this was easily fixed by pulling the net curtains). Room was very nice & finished to a really high standard.

The staff were friendly & helpful. They let us store our bags when we arrived well before check in time & in the end they let us into our room a couple of hours early which was great.

We didn't have the breakfast so can't comment on that.

“As good as expected”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

This hotel appears to receive a continuous stream of good reports and deservedly so. It is rather dated in style and decor but the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful - nothing too much trouble ..... we arrived back from sightseeing soaking wet and a portable radiator was delivered to our room within minutes so that we could dry out our gear. Recommend going for a room facing the square - sound proofing from outside noise is excellent but footfall noise can be heard from room above. Plenty of bars close by - the hotel bar, entered from outside hotel, is more of a night club. Good choice of restaurants within a few minutes walk - see restaurant entries for Le Compostelle + L'orange Bleue .... both outstanding. City sightseeing tour operated by Tourist Office around the corner was well worthwhile.

Room Tip: Go for a 4th floor room facing the square
