“Choose carefully”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

We have used this hotel on several occasions before and have been satisfied. On this visit we were disappointed. The welcome at reception was good - they knew we were coming. The room was a disappointment. It was clean and a fair size, but had no curtain. I had to lean out of the window and try to close the wooden shutter, which would be OK on a warm dry day, but no joke on a cold and windy night. Got undressed and went for a bath, but no bathplug. In fairness on complaining next morning it was fixed while we were out, unlike the toilet seat which was loose throughout our stay.

The restaurant was very disappointing. We were seated at 7-00pm and ordered quickly. Because one of our group opted for the starter buffet, we were left waiting for our main courses until 8-25 and only got them when we complained loudly. One couple actually walked out saying they had waited too long. When the meal came it was nothing special and the following evening we ate at the Red Pepper restaurant across the road as recommended to us by another couple who had similarly suffered from poor service in the past.

“One to avoid if at all possible”

Having spent some time travelling round the Benelux countries, my wife and I stayed here one night because it is so convenient for the ferry to UK - it was also the worst hotel we stayed in by some considerable margin [and I speak as someone who has been staying in Campanile hotels on and off for nearly 30 years - oh, and we speak several languages, including French].

We made the mistake of reserving a tbale for dinner for 1930h; when we came down at 1915h intending to have a drink in the bar first we were hastily ushered to our table in a virtually empty dining room, so we ordered drinks there. The drinks arrived fairly promptly, but nothing else did. The miserable "waitresses" spent the next 30 minutes totally ignoring us - making a point of walking away from our table and not even looking in our direction - while they busied themselves serving everyone who arrived afterwards [many of whom they seemed to know personally].

Our meal orders were eventually grudgingly taken at about 1950h. By 2020h, [now one HOUR after we arrived] having watched many other later arrivals being served we walked out and told the miserable ignoramous to cancel dinner.

We went over the road to the Poivre Rouge [a grill type establishment] and were served within 10 minutes. This was adequate, by by now we were getting past caring!

One return to the "hotel" we discovered that our room [overlooking the car park] had no curtains, so ir wasn't a question of "lights on or off?" as much as floodlights! We had booked a non-smoking room but the whole place stank of tobacco, and the fire doors didn't close properly. There also seemed to be a door banging competition going on.

Then when we turned down the duvet we found a used, dried, stiff paper tissue in the bed. God only knows what it had been used for, or by whom, but I managed to get it into a plastic bag and presented it to the management in the morning.

To be fair to the manager, she apologised profusely and cancelled the charge for our stay, but that's besides the point really, these things shouldn't happen in the first place.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else - this is the worst Campanile we have ever stayed in.

“Adequate, quiet and convenient for the ferry, though perhaps a little expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

We stayed in room 38 which faces an area of grass and there is a roundabout a few hundred metres away. However, the windows are modern and of high quality so there is no traffic noise. (The biggest noise problem is the corridor noise - the doors to the rooms slam very hard.)

No curtains, just a wooden shutter you close by leaning out the window. It is very effective- it completely blocks out all the light.

Our room cost EUR 59, which considering the location and the quality of the fittings is a little expensive.

The hotel restaurant closes at 22:00 and there is really nothing in Loon Plage, so try nearby Gravelines instead.

Plus points: free wifi, air conditioning, infrared bathroom heater, tea making facilities (kettle, teabags, milk). Large tv with lots of french channels, though only CNN in English. Staff were polite.

Room Tip: Quieter rooms are the ones not facing the car park.

“restaurant: food ok but service poor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2011

We only used the restaurant part (as staying in hotel Premiere class next to it: budget branch from same company).
We were coldly and strangely welcomed at reception.
The food is ok, but being Saturday evening, they run out of plenty of items in their "gourmand" menu. No alternative from A la carte menu were offered.
The starter and desert buffet are good though.
A more welcoming staff would help.
The location is good for UK residents crossing the channel via Dunkerque

“we have stayed several times & keep going back...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2010

have read other reviews & yes the hotel may need a refurb in places but it is busy due to its proximity to the ferry & therefore takes a lot of wear & tear. It is a two star stop-over hotel & not a final destination after all, so don't expect the "George V" Bar prices are high, large (chilled by the way) Heineken was 6€ but with standard beer at 2€30/2€50 for 250ml elsewhere, sadly this is to be expected at a hotel bar - no matter how much it hurts! Menus have changed at Campaniles over the years & they are not the value or quality they were 25 yrs ago when we started using them but having traveled from the NW of England or S.W. France the hotel & food hit the spot, either as a stop-off on our way south after getting off the ferry or for a night's rest before going home the next morning. We've had no gripes with the food, the "puds" - bought in or not - provide a really nice selection for example. the only thing we miss is REAL HOME-MADE soup we used to see being prepared in the old style open kitchens the Campaniles used to have. Oh yes and perhaps the savoury buffet & cheese selection isn't quite as varied as it was in times past.
No problems with the staff, all seem more than pleased to assist & are very welcoming. Arriving when they are setting up for dinner or having their own early evening break may make the hotel seem inefficient at times but these are, if I remember correctly, family run franchises & not corporate big business operations despite part of a major chain. Last time we were there they had to cope with a coach full of Brit school kids & managed remarkably well in all the ensuing chaos! Chill & enjoy... You probably have a long drive ahead!
