“There are renovated rooms and old rooms. You don't want an old room.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

The title here is really the most important thing you will get from this review or the other reviews. I wish I had researched this place more carefully myself. The hotel is in the midst of renovations. Some rooms have been completely renovated, as shown in the nice photos here and on the hotel website. There are lots of positive reviews from guests that stayed in those rooms. But the hotel also has old rooms that have only had the most basic of updates to comply with the hotel's new three-star rating. For those not familiar with the French hotel rating system, the ratings are based on objective criteria that look at, for instance, the size of the room, the configuration of the lighting (really), presence of a hairdryer (really), and many other practical and some odd things. They are not subjective reviews of the quality of the hotel. So while apparently the old rooms already meet the 3-star criteria, they are in my opinion far worse that several other 2-star hotels where I've stayed in France. My room was in poor repair. The ceiling light looked ready to fall from the ceiling (see posted photo). The carpet had a stain just inside that door that must have had an unsavory origin (see photo). The shower was moldy with cracked tiles (see photo). The room was also simply old and outdated with gaudy furnishings (see photo). Simply put, it desperately needed renovation.

The positives were the employees and the breakfast. As others have noted, the employees are all very polite, helpful and speak flawless English. The location is just ok. It's near the train station, which was convenient for me. But it is a bit of a seedy neighborhood.

I should have done more research myself. But I feel deceived by the 3-star rating that the hotel website shows. The website does show the old, un-renovated "club" rooms. But they appear much nicer in the photos than in real life. They look old and charming instead of just old. At a 110 Euros, I really felt like I had rented a 60 Euro room and contributed another 50 Euros to their renovation fund. It was an uncomfortable, unpleasant stay.

Once fully renovated, I think Hotel Riquet might be a safe choice. Though the rates on the renovated rooms are far higher. But I can only rate the room I had, which was very poor for a 3-star hotel and even quite bad for a 2-star hotel.

Dear Sir,
The pictures you have taken come from two rooms of the Chartreuse where you stay with your colleague.
Your opinion is very relevant and chambers of the Chartreuse (range club from the hotel Riquet ) are not yet at the executive or executive suites level of the Hotel Riquet).
The hotel is constantly being renewed and the room you had, has a new bathroom and carpets will be changed normally during the week of January 16 to 20. I will not fail to spread new photos of this room so that you see for yourself the changes.
I understand your opinion on the price you paid, but you should know that you went through an online booking company which takes about 25% commission on the price of the room. For comparison, making a direct booking with 10 more euros and you would have an executive room that our customers appreciate.
Nevertheless, thank you for you raise good points and I will not fail to share them with my staff.
Hotel Riquet is already a safe choice and I hope soon to announce major changes.
When you return to Toulouse, I want you to call me personally at 05.61.62.55.96 I make you a proposal.
Please excuse my English which is not as "fluent" as my wife or my staff.

“Good last minute find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

Hotel Riquet was a late minute find on our driving trip around France. We called them to see if there were any rooms available and they said yes. Out of desperation we took the room they offered to us and did not ask for the cheapest room; I’m pretty sure they put us in the executive suite room on the top floor and when we arrived, we noticed that there were many rooms available due to the amount of keys stacked behind the receptionist.

The room is enormous with an enormous flat screen television and an enormous bed. The bathroom is also enormous with a shower, a bath tub and two sinks! A hairdryer is available and the toilet is in a separate room. The bed was reasonably comfortable but the only problem was that there was no air-con; this made it very difficult to sleep as it was extremely humid during the summer.

Upon arrival, staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was ok –basic continental breakfast for 10 euros per day. Parking was available for 10 euros per day. The hotel was in a good location with a metro station nearby.

Overall we were satisfied with the hotel - it was just out of our price league... but then again, it was a last minute find.

Hello Kimmydotcom,

First and foremost, many thanks for your input, it is always good to recieve feedback from last minute/ one night stay / guests who tend to be blunter about their first opinion.

Yours had been reviewed by the whole reception staff and I would like to point out that having keys on the board doesn't systematically mean having vacancies, it can also mean that our guests prefer leaving their keys with us when going out, which was definitely the case then, or even simplier: it could also mean that the guests haven't checked in yet.

Although understandable, your assumption was a bit rough and I really want to clarify that we are a 100% independant hotel and therefore suffer no pressure in selling a suite instead of a room. My staff is trained in proposing EVERY range available on the required date; and although not an illegal practice, I forbid anyone at the desk to push a range forward by claiming that it's the last one available.

We now offer special discount rates and special offers for last minute or weekend bookings accessible from our website and even here on tripadvisor.

If you're planning to come back to Toulouse, feel free to check them out OR to contact me directly on +33.561.625.596. and I'd be happy to find the best value deal for you (including our new and awesome breakfast buffet!)

Best regards,

“poor room but very nice staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

The hotel Riquet has at present 2 different area: one already renovated and another one still to be renovated; unfortunately we had a room in this last one.

The room was big and clean but not at the level of a 3 stars hotel: we had problem with the toilt, the air conditioning and there was not frigo bar, very useful n the past weeks wile in France there was "alerte canicule".

So after 1 night there we decided to leave without doing the 2nd night booked.

The staff was very helpful, they apologized and asked for having our mail in order to invite us 1 night for free once ended the renovation; they did not want us to pay the fees for the parking and surprised us for being so nice.

So if you go there just check to have a renovated rooms in order not to have the same problems.

Dear Silvia,
Many thanks for your input. Hôtel Riquet has been undergoing serious renovation work -almost continuously- for the last 10 years or so.
Again, I sincerely apologize for your negative experience with us and would like to reaffirm our invitation for you and your family once refurbishment of the Chartreuse is completed.

We have a lot of novelties and surprises that we cannot disclose quite yet, but I can assure you that they'll contribute in making your next stay with us a far better one than last.

Best regards,

A nice hotel, very good location, close to the subway and the train station, but in a calm area at the same time, moreover in a walking distance from the down-town. Friendly staff, no problems with communication in English. Rooms very clean and nicely furnished.

“Good value and reasonably central”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2011

This was booked quite late, so I ended up staying in an executive suite, rather than a basic room, as that was all that was still available. The room was clean, nicely decorated and quite well-appointed ubt it was just a big bedroom - not a suite with separate sitting and bed rooms.

Fast fee wi-fi available, which always scores extra points for me.

Good continental breakfast, but the breakfast room was a bit over-crowded...some people had to leave as all tables were taken.
