“Beautiful hotel, outstanding service”

In a renewed fortress, this hotel is - since 5-6 years - the best place to stay in Metz, a eastern France city worth the visit or a stay. The restaurant is the best in town and rooms are large and well furnished. Service is outstanding, great breakfast and large parking.

Room Tip: Restaurant and bar closed on Sunday. A pity !

“Ridiculously expensive, poor hotel wrapped around good, but ambitious overpriced restaurant.”

En route to Italy, was looking for a good hotel as stoppover in the vicinity of Metz. Unfortunately I chose this one ! Clearly the restaurant is the owners passion both food and restaurant service is very good, a little pricey but clearly a destination restaurant in the area. The hotel is where everything falls apart, rooms are holiday inn/travel lodge type with poor lighting, which woukd be fine if it were not for the ridiculous rate. Furthermore they charge for everything..wifi (€15), streetparking in front of hotel (€20)..if you are looking to drop €500 for great dinner (for one) but lousy room, and terrible front of house, with wifi and parking included, this is the place.

“Never seen such mean management”

On the verge of plainly cheating clients! A room was rented for a conference (very expensive) . Supposed to be 90 sq.m; was less than half!! Problem twice with the sound system !!! Wi-fi (absolutely necessary for the conference) had to be paid extra (again very expensive) and CREME DE LA CREME : staff (obviously obeying instructions) came to remove the bottles of water (not empty) for the speakers before the end of the conference as the session was 1/2 h late !!!! ONE OF THE REVIEWS SAYS PRETENTIOUS !!! this is an UNDERSTATEMENT !!!

“Old Building”

Back when I was a student in Metz, this builing was no used, now it is a 5* Hotel. In the very center of Metz it is a top location. But not easy to reach by car and only very few park possibilities. Nice walk from train station anyway. The room was big with even a kitchen. This is the only plus And if you don´t want and exect more it is OK - BUT you get a small fully equiped kitchen but no possibility to make a tee or coffee. The bath is big BUT no shower wall - Lot of water on the floor NOT good. Reception is next to the door . No atmosphere. Lady at front desk was more interested to fix a roll paper than to welcome me. They don´t ask about a NON Smoking room (but was indicated in my reservation) A 5* Hotel without a SPA or at least Sauna is NOT good,..... Would not book the hotel again if I have to pay the full price

“very pleasant stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

Stayed here for two nights in early August. We used Metz as a base whilst we visited the Verdun battlefield site about 1 hour drive away. Metz itself is a beautiful and interesting city.
We found the hotel slightly tricky to find as their was a change in the road layout not updated on our sat-nav.
The hotel is situated adjacent to a large pedestrianized city 'square' in a quiet and attractive area. It is a large building dating back to 1559 and still has a bastion-like appearance from it's military roots. Access is gained through a security gate and intercom which we used once. We found the security reassuring and parking was right next to the hotel. We were given a friendly welcome by the concierge who guided us to park next to the entrance within a roped off space..an excellent start!
The smiling receptionist spoke excellent English and checking-in was quickly completed.
We were personally shown to our room by the Concierge who showed us the air-con and answered any queries we had.
Our top-floor room was spacious, clean and attractively decorated. Plenty of space for luggage and the bathroom was large with separate shower cubicle to the bath.
The bedroom windows ran the whole length of the room and we had a fine view of the ancient Chapel of the Knights Templar (which is worth a visit). The large commercial city square, where most of the concert halls are sited around was partially viewed behind the chapel.
Our stay at La Citadelle was very quiet and we only saw a handful of guests. The hotel has a very nice ambiance and is stylishly furnished. We used the public bar once which was relaxing and the gent attending to us had very good knowledge of wines and Champagne.
Breakfast was again quiet; a Continental buffet which we helped ourselves to. We only saw a waiter twice who replenished our coffee (for me this is very important)!
We didn't dine in the hotel but did so in Metz where there are numerous restaurants.
On checking-out the receptionist on duty was again very polite and charming.

The city of Metz is rich in culture and history. It has a spacious feel owing to it's large public squares and is very well kept.
There are numerous concert halls, museums, and the Opera House is the oldest working in France.
The large shopping area of Metz is a couple of minutes walk away across the square and there are many attractive and historic streets to explore. There are lively, public squares within these areas for relaxing with bars and cafes all around. We enjoyed a couple of hours at one of these.
The Cathedral, St Stephen's, (Cathedrale Saint-Etienne) is stunning, one of the most splendid I have seen and is is a must see.
