“Excellent reception staff badly let down by poor waiting staff and food”

Recently stayed (June 2010) in this hotel for over-night stay. Excellent and very helpful reception staff at check-in and check-out who very very badly let down by poor decor and very poor waiting staff in the restaurant. Despite asking for an English menu we ordered in French only to be given an English menu for dessert by the same waitress who claimed that she didn't know that we were English-speaking! Food very poor quality and served the wrong wine in the wrong size bottle (ordered a half bottle and not a full one) at the wrong (more expensive) price. Loose electrical sockets in the rooms with bare wires in places and poor air conditioning - 32C outside so was needed.

“Worst breakfast ever.”

The hotel was a little further from the town than we would have liked on an out of town retail park. The receptionist was pleasant and the room was OK but a little worn. The secure, free parking was excellent. We were staying over a weekend and the hotel was very quiet with seemingly only a few guests so we didn't use the restaurant as we would have been the only diners but there was a very nice but very busy Countepaille just 2 minutes walk away which was really good value. The breakfast however was unbelievably bad, perhaps because there were only a few guests, but apart from some cereal, bread, jam and yoghurt the only thing on display was 4 very tired sausages in a pool of grease. We had a cold coffee and cereal and then left somewhat disappointed. Apart from the breakfast the hotel wasn't bad value and Nimes and the Camargue are very well worth making a trip for.
There was no free internet and it was quite expensive to buy.

“Would stay again on a future visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2010

We stayed at this hotel for five nights. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The bathroom had ample space and a good tub/shower. The halls could be updated a bit to brighten them up (updated wall coverings and carpet). The rooms could also use an upgrade to the carpet and bedding. While the beds were comfortable, they were very low and the bedspreads could be updated. Other areas of the hotel were bright and modern. Can't say enough about the hotel staff. They were reponsive to my emails prior to our trip and very helpful onsite. Christine, in particular, at the front desk was most helpful. Breakfast was good each morning.

The location was great for our event and sightseeing. There is also a lot of shopping within walking distance.

Only downside was the internet service. The Wifi was very slow and almost impossible to access at times. Sometimes I had to go to the lobby to get better reception.

“Convenient but .........”

Stayed here at the end of a countyside gite stay . Rooms were comfortable , breakfast fine, location well placed for airport and city of Nimes.
The immediate locale, however, is a concern and I would advise tourists to be especially vigilant about personal security and car crime.

  • Liked — near airport
  • Disliked — poor security

“Fantastic Restaurant - Dated Hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2007

My husband and I flew to Nimes on Christmas Eve. Prior to this I had been in contact with the Holiday Inn by email and found the staff to be extremely helpful, advising that the restaurant would be closed on 24 December but that Christmas lunch was available the following day.

We arrived at the hotel mid morning where a cleaner let us in and found the Receptionist who checked us in and gave us our key. The hotel is a typical 70's Fortes Posthouse with a lift on the outside of the building (entry via the lobby), and piped music throughout the premises. The lift needed a good vacuum cleaning, as did the corridors. The room was really shabby and dingy, the tea tray hadn't been replenished and the overall impression was one of neglect. We asked at reception for more supplies and were given a jug of chocolate powder but there was no milk available! Determined to enjoy our holiday we caught the bus (which stops outside and even ran on Christmas Day) into the city and enjoyed a lovely lunch in the sunshine in this very pleasant town. Arriving back at the hotel early evening we found that we were locked out and had to be admitted by a porter! We didn't see any other guests throughout our stay but, as the hotel is located about 1.5 miles ouside Nimes, in a vast shopping outlet among other small hotels, that is probably the reason, although it appreared to be the only hotel open in the area.

The lunch served in the hotel restaurant on Christmas Day was superb. The staff were extremely attentive and the restaurant was full. However, the bar was closed so we couldn't have a pre or post lunch drink, nor a drink in the evening.

The following evening my husband had a gastric "bug" (nothing to do with the food) and at midnight I asked Reception for a bottle of water, as our mini bar hadn't been replenished from the previous guests' visit, only to be told that there was some in the tap! I went down to Reception and was, begrudgingly, given a bottle by the man on duty and told that it would be added to our bill - not a problem, but most ungracious under the circumstances.

Overall, we liked Nimes very much but wouldn't recommend this hotel other than its restaurant.
