“Pleasant homely hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2006

Arriving at L'Orangerie the first time for me was like arriving at a stately home; a winding drive through tall trees to an ample carpark, then a stroll though the garden to reception. Well located if you have a car, this hotel is just off the ring-road outside of Central Nimes (5-10 minutes walk/bus/drive to town & station). A very nice restaurant & pleasant courtyard setting, the hotel has pleasant Provincial-style/furnished rooms and the corridors are full of various objets to make you feel as though you're in someones home. Away from the bustle of town, and far enough from the road to be peaceful/quiet at night. Loved it enough to return 3 times now.

  • Liked — Feels like you're in someones nice home, not in the usual clinical hotel environment
  • Disliked — Close to town, but still not central - although the town bus runs along the road outside
  • Tips/Secrets — If you have a car, ample free parking is available & well located outside congested town centre for touring the province

We stayed here for 3 nights in early September 2006 during a visit to Provence. We flew into Nimes airport and the hotel is easy to find, being close to the ring road to the south of Nimes. The hotel has plenty of car parking and is reasonably comfortable but everything looks a bit tired. There is a small unkempt garden with pool, but no one seemed to be keen to use it. The public rooms and bedrooms all seemed a bit shabby but the hotel was clean enough & the service was fine.

The hotel is about a mile from the town centre and not the nicest of walks, though there are plenty of car parks in Nimes if you want to drive in and the taxi costs 8 euros going in but costs more coming back out because of the one way system.

We ate at the hotel one night and the food & wine was better than expected, there are a number of tables outside which is a nicer dining experience than the restaurant.

“A pleasant hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 April 2006

We stayed here for four nights and were by and large happy with the place. Our room was large and pleasant with a nice little terrace. There were one or two signs of wear and tear but it was very clean.

As said in other reviews the staff are very friendly and helpful, but the walk into town (an easy 15 minutes) is not particularly nice though not unsafe or involving crossing busy roads.

The dinners we had were enjoyable though be warned the set menu is very limited and didn't change while we were there. On this theme I would take issue with the Best Western website which claims there are four restaurants "adjacent" to the Orangerie. All I can say is the we couldn't find any of them and we looked hard!

The ground floor rooms and public areas are wheelcahir accessible (didn't see a lift but there may be one)

Recommended with the rider about eating opportunities.

“Loved the Dining!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 March 2006

This was the third hotel of 4 during a 10-day tour with a group of students. It was a wonderful place to relax and recharge. The location is perfect, just far enough from the road to be quiet, but close enough to the city center to walk if so desired. The staff was pleasant and helpful, and tolerant of the many questions from the students. Most of the rooms seemed luxurious to the students, and those of the adults were comfortable as well. Dinner was one of the best I've had, although not as great as the first time I stayed, two years ago. Definitely not the cuisine one expects when dining with a group of teens! Best of all, the dining rooms are set up so that our group was not a loud nuisance to other guests.
I will definitely return here if traveling in the area again!

“Good, friendly hotel”

I've stopped at this hotel with my wife on 2 occasions, the 1st for 5 days and the 2nd just for one night last August.

On both occasions I found the hotel perfectly satisfactory. The rooms were a little small but either had a terrace or patio doors leading to the pool.

Dinner in the restaurant was top notch, although the salted cod wasn't quite to my Geordie taste!

As for the walk into Nimes, it took less than 20 minutes and was like most cities in the South of France. I'm not quite sure what else you would expect!
