“You won't be disappointed if you set your expectations low enough”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 March 2010

We stayed here last summer for two nights. We had diffuculty getting a reservation because of Bastille Day, and this place was one of the few still with availability. I guessed that was bad omen, and set my expectatations prettty low. The hotel is off a highway; there are no sights to see within walking distance. The hotel is surrounded by fruit trees, which was pleasant. The check-in area and dining rooms were suprisingly nice. The hallways were very dark. The rooms were sub-par - on the level of a bad Days Inn. The bathroom was old with cracked tiles and chipped grout. The room was tiny. I think we did get free internet. We were lead to believe that breakfast was included - it was not. I thought the breakfast was pretty good, although probably not a good value. You could eat inside, or outdoors on a nice patio.

“Fantastic hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2009

We stayed for 3 nights from August 2nd, and really couldn't have been more pleased with this hotel. The rooms are not large, but comfortable, and the setting and general ambience was lovely. The hotel has a wonderful chef, and we certainly had some lovely meals during our stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful also.

“Elegant and Relaxing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2009

We stayed only a night coming back from a road trip on the Atlantique France so we were very tired when we got there, but service was polite. It is near the autoroute but is surrounded by trees and there was a peaceful place with private parking, garden, a swimming-pool with deckchairs. Room was wonderful, large, elegant, franch design, rococo and touile de jouy style everywhere. Bathroom large and functional. and.. free wi-fi!

“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2007

Location is handy, but not charming (off a main road around Nimes) though it is not noisy. There is a nice, small pool (very cold!), and there is a Casino cafeteria close by which was great for the kids/ tea. The food in the hotel was fine, nothing special, though breakfast was very nice.
We has 2 adults and 2 small children in our room and it was very hot; the aircon was either not working or couldn't cope, in fact it was much, much hotter in the room that in the rest of the hotel. Staff were very friendly. The walk into Nimes took just 20 mins with the buggy.

  • Liked — pool and terrasse
  • Disliked — very hot in the room at night

“Disgusting”

The prior review by Mandelbrot says it all.

We arrived in Nimes after an all-day drive from Dijon. At the time, Tripadvisor had a fairly high rating for the hotel (#4 of 36, or something like that). Based on this rating, we booked a room at L'Orangerie.

As a preliminary matter, to get there, you have to drive through Nimes, which has some of the more depressing scenery in Provence. Do NOT spend time in Nimes if you don't have to. Go right to St. Remy.

In any case, as for the hotel, the place is a total joke. The "gym" -- which is advertised as one of the hotel's amenities -- is really a 75 sq foot shack with what looks like a vintage treadmill from the 1950's, and virtually no other equipment. The "pool" is more like a large bathtub than a pool.

Inside the hotel, the hallways were dark; apparently, the motion sensors didn't work, although it's possible that they don't have sensors. The room itself is just plain gross. My poor mother wiped a kleenex on the table and it was covered with filth. No coffee maker. Musky sheets and bed. We were afraid to sleep there. After a few minutes of first entering the room, we told the front desk we could not possibly stay.

Despite our fatigue, we put our bags in the rental car, and drove to Arles. In Arles, we stayed at Jules Ceasar, a very average experience, but infinitely better than L'Orangerie. Vacations are just too precious to waste on dumps like this.

Based on my experiences at this Best Western and with Delta (which we used to fly to and from Europe), I would advise avoiding American brands for European travel. For hotels, you cannot go wrong with Accor or Novotel.

Hope this helps.
